Sir, As a deacon in the Roman Catholic Church I can assure you that the claim that “Tony Blair would have to receive the sacraments of baptism, confirmation and Holy Communion to be received formally” is incorrect (report, May 17 ). Mr Blair has already been baptised; the Catholic Church would not try to baptise him again.
Baptised in the Church of England in 1953, I was received into full communion with the Catholic Church in 1991. In no way was I turning my back on my Anglican past, I was simply moving on in my spiritual life.

To Linda from Albany,
I can "confirm" that what The Reverend Peter Simpson writes is a correct representation of Roman Catholic teaching and dogmatic theology. I don't know what the particulars are of your siblings' Reception, but it sounds superficially to me at least that it was a mistake on the part of a local cleric rather than a diocesan policy in contravention of Church teaching.
Rev Patrick O'Donnell, Ascot,
Generally speaking, the only time a person has to be "re-baptized" would be if there were insufficient documentation of their prior baptism, therefore necessitating "another" baptism, since the first baptism could not be substantiated.

frank, sydney,
It seems to depend on the diocese. When my siblings, both baptized in the Anglican Church as set out in the Prayer Book, were received in to the RC Church, both were required to be baptized again, not conditional baptism but the whole nine yards.
Linda, Albany NY US,
I'd have thought confession and public penance would be Blair's starting place.

Really? You do surprise me Reverend Peter Simpson. I was originally baptized into the Church of England, as a baby in 1944, by a relative who was a Church of England Rector and Very Reverend, up in Lancashire. When a parent eventually converted to Catholicism, the other one already was, I was baptized yet again in 1951, by the Dean of the local Catholic Church and took yet another Christian name to add to the 2 I already had, and 12 months later underwent Confirmation. However, I do not believe I was turning my back on any religion, because I am still a Christian, but at the time I was advised that a baptism was necessary. Perhaps things have changed?
