Sir, Your report that senior police officers link cocaine production with murder and child abuse (July 6) needs greater emphasis. About half the world’s cocaine is supplied by the Colombia guerrilla organisation, Farc, which has consistently targeted civilians. As if to illustrate this, on the same day you also inform us of the killing of 11 Colombian local government workers by the guerrillas.
In front of the college gates where I work, a young church minister was shot dead after speaking out against the activities of a drugs gang. He has left a widow and six young children, who have gone into hiding.

So take the criminality out of the provision of drugs by legalising them; not only can you then control the quality of the drugs, but can monitor the users and perhaps help them to kick the habit.
