Attend an evening with Andre Agassi
We could have managed without a fatuous social history lesson from the sour old Antipodean Germaine Greer ('The Diana myth' , August 26). Doubtless Diana showed signs of poor judgment, and of being unwell, but to point up her lack of intellectual prowess and self-esteem is sheer spite. None of it shed any new light.
Diana had beauty and grace and, if she did make an ass of herself, did so with élan. If, as Greer suggests, her legacy only amounts to endless column inches of speculation, where exactly was the value in adding more of the same?
VIVIENNE TAYLOR, Salisbury, Wiltshire
A REAL WOMAN: A pithy, erudite article. It’s about time we put paid to this overpeddled myth of “St Diana” and her “disciples” and finally recognise that she was a woman with flaws, just like any other born of that station in life.
NICKY BUTLER, Chislehurst, Kent
IT’S CALLED LIBERATION: Doesn’t Greer of all people know things have moved on in the 21st century and women don’t have to put up with the sort of behaviour past princes of Wales got away with?
SANDRA SWERDLOW, Parkgate, Cheshire
GERMANE TO GERMAINE: Greer’s contribution told me more about Greer than about the late Princess Diana.
BRIAN RUST, Sittingbourne, Kent
ARISTOCRATIC SNEER: I just managed to stay awake to the end of Greer’s venomous article. Her writings are a natural cure for insomnia. So what if Diana or the royal family have dark sides? Most European aristocracy do, and always have. I suggest Greer change her surname to Sneer. It’s what she does best.
SEAN O’CEARBHAILL, Upper Rathmines Road Dublin 6
MAKING SENSE: The most sensible article I’ve ever read on Diana and royalty.
PRIYA SEBASTIAN, Bangalore, India
POWER PLAY: What a pity Diana died when she did. Had she survived to inspire the men of our nation, our rugby team would again be winning every match and the war in Iraq would be won.
KEN WILSON, Manchester
