We've made some changes
to The Sunday Times
Sir, Tomorrow marks the first anniversary of the murder of the Russian investigative journalist Anna Politkovskaya.
We the undersigned are all supporters of the human rights organisation RAW in WAR (Reach All Women in WAR), and this weekend we will be making the first Anna Politkovskaya Award to recognise women who are defending human rights in zones of war and conflict.
We call on the Russian Government to bring to justice, in full conformity with international standards, both those who killed Anna Politkovskaya and those who have ordered her murder.
We also call on the world’s leaders to pledge to do everything in their power to protect the journalists and human rights defenders who work in areas of war and conflict, and who speak out on behalf of the victims, as Anna did.
We owe it to the memory of Anna to protect the very few who still speak out, on behalf of those to whom nobody wants to listen.

Anna Politkovskaya was a unique journalist in her seeing the problem of Russia as society. I was really conquered by her uncomrpomised and sincere stand in her struggle against the unjustice, when I first saw her on a TV talk-show (that time it was not so censored as now in Russia!!) . She was able to look into the roots of the problems typical of Russia, and she was raising her voice to let others see that. A reward to her would be our being on alert against the raising power of totalitarism and revival of crewed pro-communist thinking and ideology. I wish the West (and East) could realize that there are still too many old-way thinking powers in Russia who would like to gain their benefits, playing with the old ideology (but not trusting in it any more, as only a fool could believe in communist ideals now) not caring about Russia's sound future. Light memory to this brave and brilliant journalist and human being!

Anna Politkovskaya was a beacon of light shining truth and integrity into darkness and corruption. She was a journalist of the highest calibre, and her moral courage was inspirational.
Sadly, there remains a shortfall in the democratic process in Russia, with continuing question marks over the independence and honesty of the judiciary, significant pressures on media outlets and free speech, and the continuing use of militia in places like Chechnya to carry out Putin's nationalist policy and suppress free and open democracy.
Is there any way Anna could be nominated for a posthumous Nobel prize?

Dear Sir,
I haven't heard about most of the people who signed this petition but all who I heard of have well a known negative attitude toward Russia. It is just enough to look at the list of their publications available on the Net to verify this. Anniversary of Politkovskaya death is just another convenient case for them to throw a bit more dirt on Russia and score some political points for themselves. This has nothing to do this the matter of the letter they signed as it does not help investigators in Russia to find the killers.
This suggests how one should treat this "honorable" effort. Just ignore it!
