Sir, The letter by Philippa Edmunds, of Freight on Rail, on the subject of longer lorries (Oct 8) is nothing if not predictable.
She trots out all the hackneyed clichés about the supposed dangers of trucks with a length of 25.25 metres and a weight of 60 tonnes. The same was said when the current capacity was proposed.
The industry looks for trials of these vehicles, no more. Experience in the Netherlands, indicates that these longer, heavier lorries can be integrated into existing traffic patterns with little risk. In that country the trials limited speed to 50mph and no overtaking is permitted.
Manoeuvrability is excellent, with quite difficult junctions navigated easily. Obviously braking systems are enhanced and in tests I have seen the outfits are quite stable when braked and swerved at the same time.
Environmentally more goods can be carried for only a small increase in fuel consumption, while the number of wheels/axles used reduces the impact upon the road and surroundings.
If this country is to grow economically then we either employ more trucks (because the average journey length of a freight run is around 50 miles, hopelessly uneconomic for rail) or we get smart and experiment.

What rubbish! Since the introduction of larger lorries as mentioned by Mr King has any body noticed a reduction in the number of lorries on our roads. I frequently meet these oversized monsters using Devons narrow lanes and shudder to think what will happen if even bigger trucks are allowed on our roads. Big trucks favour big business at the expense of our quality of life.
Clive Stringer, Eggesford, Devon
We could get smart and experiment away from road haulage Mr King. There is plenty of potential for underground freight pipeline technology to remove a lot of traffic from Britain's roads, whilst simultaneously improving supply logistics and making use of greener, cleaner energy, as plenty of other countries are starting to realise. This country could, and should, be a world-leader when it comes to this new technology but it will need the support of the major retailers as well as government if we are to produce a system that will remove much of the unsightly, congestion causing and dangerous freight transport from our roads.
N Sotto, London,
As long as you do not agree to those piggy back trucks ( Lorries ) that we have over here. These are a menace to everyone on the roads here. Including the driver. I even break the speed limit , chancing a speeding ticket to get around thes things, as they are all over the road. They are almost impossible to control. You don't stand a chance if you get into it with these things.
