Sir, In a few days heads of state and government from Africa and Europe will meet in Portugal to discuss issues common to two continents whose histories have intertwined for centuries. This is an historic opportunity to inaugurate a new era founded on shared values and a genuine friendship where we can support and learn from each other.
But that will not be possible while the summit meeting shies away from discussing two of the world’s worst humanitarian crises, those in Zimbabwe and Darfur. Despite Europe and Africa’s shared responsibility to address such crises, neither one is on the agenda. No time has been set aside for formal or informal discussion.
We expect our leaders to lead, and lead with moral courage. When they fail to do so they leave all of us morally impoverished. Where they funk the difficult issues they make themselves irrelevant. Why should we listen to the mighty when the mighty are deaf to the cries of the afflicted? Millions of Africans and Europeans would expect Zimbabwe and Darfur to be at the very top of the agenda. It is not too late.

I can only suspect this letter is from the so-called grouping of writers;the article does not say who they are!
If they are authentic writers,I really expected expected a better analysis and diagnosis of any humanitarian crises in Europe or Africa. It is silly that at this eleventh hour of the EU-Africa summit, the grouping sees it fit to post an article requesting Zimbabwe and Darfour to be put on the top of the agenda.Where they sleeping all along in the run up to this meeting. Why did they not make representations to their countries of residence for these issues to be included on the agenda.Whatever this grouping's position on these issues is a mystery.
Until they make their diagosis of these two issues clear,I do not think anyone will listen to their request.Even the Zimbabweans and Darfourians must be wondering what this groupinng is up to.

Dafur and Zimbabwe should be on the agenda. These topics will not take long. Our "leaders" only have to say:
"Tut, tut, its terrible. We cannot and will not do anything about it. The UN can't do anything either. Carry on you rogue states, we may posture and strut a kind of superior moral feeling but we are not a threat to you."
As for us voters, we just elected Jobsworths so what can we expect.
Mike Sedgwick, Eastleigh, UK
Allow me to respond to a letter, more of a petition, of the individuals lobbying for Zimbabwe and Darfur to be on top of the EU-Africa summit in two weeks.
First of - it's not new that Darfur has turned to a talking shop world over, yet so little has changed with all the hype.
Needless to say, unless there is going to be action on Zimbabwe and Darfur, it's meaningless to have them top the agenda as the disasters in Darfur and Zimbabwe are occurring at full glare of mankind, with the latter being compounded by the West with its so-called "target-sanctions."
