Shackleton’s routes

A note from Ernest Shackleton's niece

Sir, Congratulations to Richard Dunwoody and Doug Stoup who have reached the geographical South Pole (report, Jan 19). Two brave men. However, I have to point out that your report is inaccurate in saying they used the “route that Shackleton attempted in 1914”.

My uncle, Ernest Shackleton, attempted to reach the South Pole in his Nimrod expedition in 1907-09. It was in 1914 that he and his team set off on his Imperial Trans-Antarctic Expedition to attempt to cross the Antarctic continent from sea to sea.

On January 8 this year an Irish expedition team, including a young lady doctor, have been the first to reach the South Pole following the exact route that Uncle Ernest took in 1907-09.

Incidentally, in October the Shackleton Centenary Expedition will set forth. The team includes several descendants of members of the original Nimrod expedition.
