Sir, In response to Lord Mancroft’s comments on nurses (“Nurses are ‘dirty, drunken and slipshod’”, March 1), in my experience I find that there a lot of patients that I care for that are dirty, rude, drunk, and sometimes verbally or physically abusive.

Sir, Can I counter Lord Mancroft’s views on the nursing staff at the Royal United Hospital in Bath? I went to the A&E in Bath upon feeling unwell last Sunday and saw no signs of Lord Mancroft’s “grubby, drunken and promiscuous” nurses. Far from it. All of the five different teams were clean, thorough and professional. In fact I was so impressed that I have just finished penning a letter to the chief executive to that effect.

Sir, When the Royal College of Nursing says Lord Mancroft’s comments were “grossly unfair on nurses across the UK”, are they suggesting that its members are paragons of virtue, or that most are and the rest are diligent, caring and hard-working?

Few organisations have a 100 per cent efficiency rate, and according to my circle of friends there at least some nurses who do qualify for Lord Mancroft’s description.
