Sir, The Muslim Educational Centre of Oxford (MECO) is strongly opposed to the building of the proposed “super mosque” near the Olympic village in East London (report, March 22). This is sponsored by the ultra-orthodox Tablighi Jamaat (TJ), whose agenda is to transform the site into the headquarters for radical Wahhabi sectarianism in the UK.
More than any other radical Muslim group in the UK, TJ has sought to deepen the growing marginalisation of British Muslims by highlighting their isolation from the mainstream. TJ followers are known to support a virulent, intolerant version of Islam which supports women being fully covered and endorses medieval Saudi tribal rulings relating to apostasy, jihad, blasphemy, the oppression of women and religious exclusivity. None of the above is sanctioned in the Koran.
TJ seeks to make this £75 million mosque the magnet for religious fundamentalists and cultural supremacists within Britain's Muslim community. Rather than promoting an inclusive, pluralistic Muslim faith rooted in and relevant to 21st-century Britain, TJ wishes to promote a reactionary tendency which is gaining ground. A slick marketing campaign and the commissioning of new architects for the Abbey Mills mosque cannot conceal the potential threat it poses.
MECO therefore calls upon all forward-looking British Muslims to protest against the proposed mosque. Failure to prevent it will result in a Saudi-influenced and financed Islamic ideology that will generate greater social friction instead of community cohesion in contemporary Britain. This key battle is one which all integrated British Muslims, and the British people at large, must win.

What an excellent idea to build a super mosque. Let the "radicals" build it and the moderates attend it.
The term "wahabi" is largely a derogatory one.
Those are my comments about the article.
abda, bournemouth,
dear readers,
as a muslim , i 100% disagree with dr hargey's article. the information he wrote is inaccurate and false. he provides no evidence or links, and sadly i have to say that he is misleading the british public with his writing.
dr hargey does not live in newham whilst i do. i interact with all in this area. i am also a pharmacist and involved with many community project. The Tablighi Jamaat is nothing like what has been mentioned above. yes, they do want to build a large mosque with shops and other facilities which will benefit the local people. but to mention that the have some hidden 'Wahhabi' agenda is 100% false. the TJ are not 'wahhabi', the TJ is a peaceful 'teaching school' where they learn no more then the 5 fpillers of islam. as simple as that.
i went dr hargey's website, MECO, and could not find any information as to who manages MECO or who their thinkers/scholars are, so as to my conclusion- MECO is misleading public based on the above informations.

James in London are you a simpleton? Do you want to apply the same standards as Middle Eastern theocracies? Personally I feel we should hold ourselves to higher standards.
Pat McGroyn, Chichester,
There isn't even a single Church in Saudi. They are ILLEGAL! Qatar just let Christians build ONE Church only out in the middle of nowhere so local sensibilities were not "offended".
Meanwhile the Middle East funds Mosques all over the world. One rule for them and another for us.

Why do I feel there is something very strange, suspicious and covert going on in the way the Govt. does not appear to be resisting the advance of radical Islam? Why do I feel there is bias in the CPS, the Police and magistrates courts in favour of prosecuting those who firmly criticise religion but doing nothing about girls who have apparently vanished off the face of the Earth? Where are 2000, repeat 2000, missing girls, why are schools not acting to deal with these girls as truants? Why is it that I feel that religion in the UK was once benign and now when it is mentioned a chill of fear goes up my spine and I feel that it has become an imposition and an oppression? Why do I think that the UK is becoming pre programmed into sectarian and cultural violence? Why do I feel that the Govt. programme of empowering religions and massively taxpayer funding Sectarian schools is preventing moderate Muslims from integrating? Why does the UK Govt. now appear biased against the non religious?
Keith, Rayleigh, England
Thank you, Dr Hargey. That opinion coming from the chairman of MECO is much needed. If I as a non-Muslim say such a thing, no matter how true it is, then I would be viewed as Islamaphobic.
Please continue to fight the super-mosque by publicising what it really represents.

'OUR Pope' Jayil??
He's not mine, or anything to do with this country.
No more than Islam and its mad mullahs.
That this country would even consider building a massive edifice in praise of the Religion in whose name London was blown up just goes to show how weak we have become.
Say NO to this disgrace
Dave B, Stoke, UK
"No to 'super mosque'"
...on the other hand we have our Pope calling on the Saudi's to build more Mosques in Arabia.

The Muslim community would be better off if they built facilities to suit their local needs under their own resources. Being mortgaged to foreign interests and ideologies will not do them any favours.
