Sir, Conservative accusations of political opportunism around the locations on the eco-town shortlist I published on Thursday (report, April 4) are a thinly veiled attempt to justify their opposition to new affordable homes in the areas where they are needed most.
As a country we face two important challenges; the need to build more homes for first-time buyers and young families, and the need to drive forward our efforts to tackle climate change. Eco-towns are one of the ways that the Government is seeking to do this.
The shortlisted locations were chosen after assessment across Whitehall, with support from the Highways and Environment agencies and Natural England. There will now be a thorough public consultation on the list before any of the bidders make planning applications.

Well, she would say that -wouldn't she.

Well, it's not quite that straightforward. We now learn that the developer of âHanley Grangeâ is none other than our friend Tesco.
Not content with killing any competition both in the High Street and out of town, Tesco's latest wheeze is to build the towns themselves, at the centre of which will be their biggest retail outlet. This does rather take the concept of âcornering the marketâ to a new level of audacity.
From the companyâs standpoint, clearly every little helps, but should it be allowed? This is surely a quite outrageous abuse of Tesco's dominant position.
Do we no longer have any control on monopolies in Britain? And why on earth is this government relying on supermarket chains to build a way out of the mess that surrounds our current planning system?

Who suffers, yet again, due to this Labour government?
The Countryside!
Due to rapid increase of population, for many reasons, the growth of Urban sprawl is inevitable and the contraband greenbelt areas are under increasing threat and pressure.
It is said several million homes are due to be built. WHY!? Why has there been such a rapid growth of population? I personally put it down to immigration through the years.
To solve a problem, in this case housing, you have to go to the source. These eco-towns are just a way of pushing through housing development and there is nothing local government can do due to the socialists ruling this once great country.
Ian Firth, Bury St Edmunds, Britain
Of course it would help if the government would cut the VAT on renovations and repairs, and make energy efficiency on new builds fixed by law. But you're too spineless, dumb and/or in the grip of big business to do that.
Also, you forget to mention immigrants in your list of people needing houses.
Finally, is this the same eco-concerned government which is expanding aviation and trying to fudge its CO2 reponsibilities by including wind turbines built for overseas markets? Hypocrisy.

To save us all time, could you not use a separate heading for letters from government ministers explaining that a particular policy or enactment has been misrepresented or misunderstood or is already a fait accompli? They must be of interest to only a vanishingly small minority.
