Sir, The Home Secretary displays an astonishing lack of understanding of police practices and of human rights law (report, May 9). It is simply not viable for the Home Secretary to assert that the police should “harass” trouble makers. The police do not have the right to harass anyone, and it is essential that they should not slip into such practices if they wish to retain public confidence. The Home Secretary should be more cautious making populist pronouncements.

In the old days, this "harrassment" would have been called "following up crime reports" and "bringing suspects to book". Whatever happened to that?

I don't know what populist pronouncements Jon Mack read, but the report in The Times was mostly a long and detailed report of the highly effective (and legal) tactics engaged in by the Essex police force, probably too long and detailed for so-called human rights activist types to absorb
