Sir, I have tried to put myself in the place of the Iraqi people as they watch the Americans firing artillery shells at their mosques in Fallujah.

It must be like us in England watching Muslims shelling Salisbury Cathedral. I presume even our atheists would not be happy about this.

I can only begin to guess at the hatred that this is building up towards British Service personnel in Iraq.

Sir, I agree with Simon Jenkins's powerful article (Comment, “A wrecked nation, a desert, a ghost town. And this will be called victory”, November 17).

The historian Tacitus put into the mouth of Calgacus, the leader of the Celts, a rousing speech in which he said, before their massacre by Agricola’s troops, “they make a wilderness and call it peace”.
