Claims that eco-towns will not go through the proper planning process are wrong (Whitehall to force through eco-towns, News, last week). Communities will play a key role in the decision-making process for eco-towns and there will be intensive consultation locally, with only the very best proposals going forward. No decisions have been made and, if bidders do progress further, they will be subject to the local planning process, which includes full public scrutiny. The Town and County Planning Association is backing the plans to deliver thousands more affordable houses for young families and first-time buyers in housing need.

If the government chooses Pennbury for an eco town we will know it is not because it is good for the environment, but because the land is owned by the co-op, and the labour party owes £13.5 million to the co-op, has 22 MPs sponsored entirely by the co-op, and was donated £500,000 in 2005 and 2006.
vivien , leicester,
The local community has already spoken with regards to Hanley Grange and rejected the plans for development on this site. The developers have just tagged on the word "Eco" to try push this new town through. County down to parish councils are still against this proposal, what's not clear?

MsFlint is playing with words. The guidelines published by her department are very clear that if they don't get their way, they will invoke the New Towns Act and ram these changes through despite local rejection. Hanley Grange was rejected by local planners 2 years ago. Why bother again now?

Any population centre that is built up artificially by central direction will survive only with very flexible transport arrangements.
the private car with a few bicycles is the inevitable solution.
