Sir, Martin Simons calls for recognition of the contribution to our nation of the highest-achieving people in science-based industry as well as in academia (letter, May 28).

Last year the Royal Academy of Engineering elected 30 new Fellows, of whom more than half work in an industrial or applied setting. Like our colleagues in the Royal Society, we exist to promote excellence in our field and to help to foster the coming generations of achievers. Our fellowship celebrates engineers who teach, research, practise and advise on all aspects of engineering.

Engineering, with its strong links to the sciences, is at the centre of society, providing the infrastructure, products and services that we all rely on every day. We work to bring research and industry closer together for the benefit of both and to promote innovation and progress.

The UK needs to develop and benefit from all the talents of all its people. We are working to help to create a more diverse engineering workforce and to ensure that our fellowship continues to represent the best engineering talent in the land.
