Sir, William Rees-Mogg’s comparison of Barack Obama with John F. Kennedy (Opinion, June 9) is accurate in terms of their respective election campaigns but does not go far enough in analysing the impact this will have on an Obama presidency (if achieved).
Like Rees-Mogg, I recall the election campaign of 1960 when we were attracted by the idealism and charisma of Kennedy. As a young American naval officer on patrol in the Taiwan Strait, I voted by absentee ballot for him.
The outcome in the short presidency of John Kennedy was a disappointment. Within one year of his election, America was involved in the Vietnam War, which cost the lives of more than 50,000 American servicemen and women. Within two years, Kennedy proceeded with the invasion of Cuba at the Bay of Pigs. By contrast, the very experienced Dwight Eisenhower, in his eight-year presidency preceding Kennedy, resisted the French invitation in 1954 to enter Vietnam, and the British and French invitation in 1956 to invade Suez.
Experience and consistency are essential attributes for an American president. Eisenhower and Reagan both demonstrated these attributes and were arguably the best American presidents since the Second World War.
Sound judgment based upon age and experience should be what we can expect from a John McCain presidency.

Reagans people committed crimes to sell weapons to ultra rightwing extremists in Nicaragua to overthrow an democratically elected govt. But hey it was a leftist one, we've done it before in 1973. Ironically, the weapons were sold to ... Iran! Isn't it Iranic, indeed.

Wow, sure we would all like a president like Eisenhower, no dispute about that. Sadly the Reps are not so levelheaded ... anymore. And Reagan? Iran-Contra gate?
And I'm sorry, but you're over 65. Naturally you'd think that and older man is better for the job. It'd reflect well on you too.
Je Naait 't Steeds, kabul,
The Republicans have destroyed the economy at home by spending so much money on their war on terror, the wealth of America is being wasted in Iraq. McCain wants to win in Iraq with more of the same.
Surely Americans would prefer it if that money was spent on americans in the US? No brainer right!

Where was Senator McCain's sound judgment when he was unable to differentiate between Sunni and Shiite during a recent trip to the Middle East? Where was Senator McCain's sound judgment when he repeatedly claimed that Iran was training al Qaeda? Etc. Age and experience do not equate sound judgment.
Emily, US,
Delighted with this letter. John McCain is certainly the sounder choice. "Change" seems to be what the voters want - what they will get with Obama may be exactly what Mr Schueppert accurately describes as the first two years of JFK.
Ann Playfair, Woodstock, US
My experience tells me that a youthful idealist like Obama will not be able to deliver his promises when he comes up against the realities of the job. Not that he has promised anything specific! Prepare for disappointment if he wins the presidency.
