Sir, Why were these documents ever printed out in the first place (“Secret files left on train”, June 13)? Documents like this can be viewed by authorised officials on computer screens that they have to use a password to access. But once you commit them to paper, they are just an accident like this waiting to happen.

Sir, Leaving documents on trains is rather last-century when you can convey that information to others so much more efficiently these days.
One telephone conversation in my carriage concerned a commercially sensitive project that the caller discussed at length before giving his name and number in the MoD. Another related to business with the Home Secretary’s private office. And I sat next to someone reading job transfer applications from Civil Service Middle East specialists.

Sir, By the time I’ve read a copy of Metro and a few secret files, I must say that trips down to London seem to fairly fly by these days.

All the documents were left in first class where there is room to spread papers out and read them at leisure.
Perhaps our public servants need a little more time standing in standard second class where there is no room to put documents down in the first place.
