Sir, In your leader on the Great Famine of the 1930s you are absolutely right to state that “relations between states fluctuate; the victims of history remain” (June 23). Those victims were not only in Ukraine, but across many regions of the former USSR, including the North Caucuses, the South Urals and western Siberia. Indeed, if the boundaries of modern Russia were in place 75 years ago, there would have been many more Russian than Ukrainian victims.
It is precisely why Russia rejects attempts to classify and commemorate the famine as a genocide perpetrated against the Ukrainian people. It is no surprise that the many millions of Russians who count their forbears among the victims should object so strongly to this manipulation of history. The tragedy is being distorted deliberately to drive a nationalist political agenda in Ukraine, driving a wedge between the Russian and Ukrainian people.
Russia firmly believes that all the famine’s victims should be honoured — irrespective of ethnicity or nationality. The parliament of Russia has adopted a resolution to this effect, a sentiment reinforced by the 58th session of the UN General Assembly.

I would ask that the good Ambassador go into the now-public archives of the NKVD and KGB and read all the pertinent letters written by Joseph Stalin and his henchmen/assassins that will divulge in gory detail what the underlying intent of the Holodomor truly was with respect to the Ukrainians.
ihor terleckyj, Bloomfield NJ , USA
The ambassador knows full well that the Holodomor targeted ethnic Ukrainians primarily in Ukraine but also on Russian territory. That Russians died too as a result of their policies is not at issue. The Kremlins denial of the Ukrainianess of the Holodomor is simply the final act of their genocide
Volodia, Zhytomyr, Ukraine
I am Russian, my great grand parents died at that time, from 12 kids they had, only 3 survived. Its tradegy of the people and shame on those who try to gaine some politic points by trying to blame russians
Marina, Moscow, Russia
We can argue about this indefinitely.
The recognition of the Holodomor as genocide is not anti-Russian it is about honouring the memory of the victims and finally giving them historical justice.
Maybe Moscow should consider being a little less sensitive - this is not about them!!!
Stefan Jajecznyk, Nottingham, UK
2Arks: Facts are well known and reasonably well documented despite the USSR attempt to destroy all the evidence. Some of them are given in the original Times article. The format of this forum does not allow for an in-depth analysis, but u can read Robert Conquest's The Harvest of Sorrow, for instance

"Russians trying to hide the murderous behaviour of their troops...". SOVIET troops, Riley. With at least 40% of troops ethnic Ukrainians, led by Ukrainians (Chubar, Kosior...).

Ilya Kovalchuk born and raised in Tver is also a Ukrainian, eh?
Oleg, Ontario, Canada
Apart from famine further brutality, was imposed on Ukraine brought about by Stalin as he feared the increasing autonomy that Mykola Skrypnik, Commissar for Education had encouraged in the country. In January 1933 he was replaced by Pavel Postyshev who accused him of Ukrainisation.
Margaret Siriol Colley, Nottingham, Britain
Roman, you give figures, but you don't say your sources.
maria, it's a pity that people died, but your president & your "historians" lie to you. Not a genocide but just a usual famine. If you want people to believe you that don't lie, give facts. I wonder why do most of those who speak of this...
Arks, Barnaul, Russian Federation
...If you want people to believe you that don't lie, give facts. I wonder why do most of those who speak of this so called "genocide" shows photos of a famine in Russia in 20s? Why, if there are so many facts & documents, eh?
Arks, Barnaul, Russian Federation
After all there were non-Jews who perished in Nazi concentation camps, but, I hope, the Russian Ambassador would not deny that Holocaust was an act of genocide.
dan, Cardiff,
In 1933 RSFSR included Kazakhstan where most of the "Russian" (read: ethnic Kazakhs) died from famine. 8,000,000 ethnic Ukrainians resided in RSFSR, 3,000,000 in North Caucasus, where hardest hit was Kuban with 900.000 Ukrainians (62% of population). Ethnic Russians were very minority of victims.
Roman, Monteal, Canada
As a Briton living in Ukraine I am troubled to see this site used as a propoganda platform for Russians still trying to hide the murderous behaviour of their troops in the 1930's - Holodomor evidence is overwhelming, despite Stalin's attempts to destroy it. Read a non-Russian history book about it.
Riley, Kiev, Ukraine
Only now our president tries to tell about this genocide to the world and he has terrible punishment, hatred from all the Russians because they are scared we will ask for compensation, make full investigations, open all documents from communist regime in 1932-33. But we dont ask it. Russians destroyed the first ever exhibition about it in Moscow gallery 2 years ago, bit the staff there and there was nobody responsible for it. Police was silent and if you tell them truth about it, they will just hate you but God IS GREAT!
Ukraine is free country now but the memory of 5 millions Ukrainians killed from pointless starving, at time when Ukrainian peasants had the biggest harvest for 10 years is still crying & telling today to all world: Dont forget us, please! We are innocent victims! We did nothing wrong to die like this!
maria, london, uk
I can in law witnessed about my grandmother being tortured but she didnt died after Stalins food scavengers ransacked houses. How you can prefer lie about history Russia if Russian ambassador truthfully defends Russia? Ambassador dont defend Stalin. My grandfather has perished defending Russia from Nazis, and other grandfather was in Gulag, and they bequeathed to me to defend multicultural polyethnic Great Russia.
Sergei, St-Petersburg, Russia
How can The Russian ambassador Blatantly lie about history and Stalin. My mother in law witnessed her mother being tortured and killed and her sister sibblings died of starvation after Stalins food scavengers ransacked houses and fields and took away their cows back to Russian borders.
Eugene Hawryszko, Melbourne, Australia
What do you know about US Holodomor in 1930? The great depression had south US famine. How many black and poor people could die in USA? and even real genocide ameridians. Why, economic policy of industrialization of Bolsheviks was absolutely identical of British economic policy of industrialization "when sheeps to eats of people".
Sergey, St-Petersburg, Russia
The British aristocrats had money from trade of the slaves, but Why they have expelled the peasants and have executed the wanderers not died from famine? Also, US archipelago Gulag had huge quantity of individual islands on all south of USA. Anglo-Saxon superstrain don't want the world to know how brutal they were to amerindiands, black, Indians and even British peasants.
Sergey, St-Petersburg, Russia

Also well documented is where the grain went. Not only grain - the Hermitage and other Russian museums were literally looted at that time. This grain was consumed in the West while people in Russia and Ukraine were dying from hunger. Think about it before rushing to lay the blame.
Oleg, Ontario, Canada
Everyone should remember, that there was not Russian Empire, but Soviet Union. Soviet leaders cared little about "ukrainians", "russians", "khazakhs" etc. Social groups resizing and other communistic plans - that was their agenda. Ethnic nationalism was not even possible that time.
DmitryS, Tula, Russia
The revisionism of history is not by "nationalists" but by Russophiles like the Ambassador.
The sealing of Ukraine's borders, the mass export of grain during a very good harvest, and the Kremlin's replacement of dead Ukrainians with Russian's is documented.
