Sir, When our village shop is finally forced to close through the withdrawal of the post office we will not be able to get bread and milk within a four-mile radius.

The reality of nationwide rural post office closures is that for thousands of old, infirm or disabled people, and for those without private transport, it will mean the loss of their ability to survive independently because they will no longer have ordinary access to basic food — let alone money or stamps.

In a humane society the vulnerable and isolated should be the last offerings to collateral damage, not the first. The Government must think again in its deliberate complicity in these targeted closures and provide alternative support for village shops. Bread and milk is not a lifestyle choice.
