Sir, I do not regard chip-and-pin technology (report, March 8) to be any safer than any other pin system.

Because chip and pin is often used in busy shops, it is difficult to enter the number without someone near by being able to see it and there is a greater possibility of the card being stolen by a pickpocket.

My old card had my photograph adjacent to my sample signature and it would have been difficult for anyone to impersonate me as well as copying my signature. The photograph provided useful proof of identify when abroad.

Sir, A couple of years ago my credit card was cloned and someone spent £4,000 on it. As I never spend more than £1,000 per month, I asked the card company to reduce my credit limit. Within a few weeks I received notification that, due to my good credit rating, my credit limit was being raised to £6,000. I again asked for it to be decreased. Since then, this performance has been repeated regularly.

Credit card companies must stop automatically increasing credit limits and ask people to set a reasonable limit for themselves which would remain in force until the cardholder asks for a change.
