Sir, Mr Cameron states in his speech, Fixing Broken Society: “We talk about people being ‘at risk of obesity’ instead of talking about people who eat too much and take too little exercise.” (report, July 8) But a wealth of evidence from medical research indicates that some people are “at risk of obesity” much more than others.
For example, genetically identical twins, separated at birth and raised separately, remain not only extremely similar in facial appearance in adult life but also in weight. Research has identified at least ten different single gene disorders that inevitably result in severe obesity starting in childhood. This observation is not just relevant to “rare” cases. Inherited variation in a series of genes has been identified that correlates with variation in body weight, including two that between them account for nearly ten pounds of weight variation between people in the general UK population. These genes code for proteins that appear to play a role in appetite control. Some people are born hungrier than others. We are not all dealt the same hand of cards either by nature or by nurture.
Reducing the problem of obesity will not be achieved by stigmatising people. Of course it is true that eating less and exercising more will lessen obesity but this is easier said than done. Many players must contribute to finding solutions including the food industry, town planners, the healthcare professions, the research community, as well as individual citizens.

If you eat more calories than you burn, you put on weight, no matter what your genetic makeup.

No point. The myth is there; "overweight is wrong" and Medically Correct (MC) myths are as inviolate as PC myths. The fact that there is research evidence out there that shows that the obese survive surgery better than normal weight, that the overweight live longer but that is simply IGNORED!

The body mass index was invented by a belgium polymath by the name of Quetelet between 1830 and 1840 to start the study of social politics. It wasn't designed to show someone's health but has been hijacked by lazy medical professionals as a baton to hit people over the head with.
Paula, Kettering,
Weight is a PRIVATE matter. No one has the right to look at another and judge them for their looks. We've come to expect this and it's accepted behavior. It shouldn't be. You can't shame people into losing weight and it's wrong that we try.
Juliet, Bailey, USA
We're not talking about 10 pounds. We're talking about 50. I'm too fat. It's because I eat too much and don't take enough exercise. I have no real excuse for this, so stop trying to provide one for me- or anybody else - who could do better.

How many example of "genetically identical twins, separated at birth and raised separately" exist.

Look at old photos and films of crowd scenes. Where are the fat people? There are a few but not nearly as many as today. Our genes cannot have changed that much in one or two generations. Our way of life and our diets have though.
Mike Sedgwick, Eastleigh, UK
Some people may well be born "hungrier" than others. But the simple fact is that if you eat too much and don't get enough exercise, you get fat. We are all born with different weaknesses and propensities, but that does not mean we can abdicate responsibility for ourselves.

If the fact that we are not all dealt the same hand by nature becomes incorporated into accepted wisdom, society will have to deal with its influence on our attitudes to dealing with problems in addition to obesity- particularly criminality, other antisocial traits and drug & alcohol addiction.
