Sir, While I defer to Mr Sugarman (letter, July 22) in matters of Jewish history, I must question his comments about Hadrian’s Wall.
It was built to set a limit to the British part of the Roman Empire and to keep out the marauding Picts (the Scots were still in Ireland). Running across desolate and largely unpopulated land, the wall crushed no culture and did not seek to do so.
Good fences make good neighbours. To suggest that this, or any other, wall is a symbol of racism is a very sweeping statement indeed.

The Roman Empire can be considered an early prototype of the European Union. It is obvious that the Romans were forced to build both walls (Hadrians was the more successful one) in order to stop the inhabitants of England fleeing their tyranny.
