Sir, As a Canadian economist and management consultant who has long been aware of the UK’s ugly underbelly of yob culture, I am appalled at the jailing of Linda Walker (report, March 30).

I have given serious thought to relocating my professional practice and my family to the UK and have in hand a four-year UK work permit based on my UK ancestry and Commonwealth citizenship.

However, if the handling of this incident is a fair reflection of Britain’s attitude to its hooligan subculture, you can count me out.

Sir, How ironic that, at a time when the Government is pledging to clamp down on antisocial behaviour and yob culture, yet another householder is to be imprisoned for the “crime” of defending her own property and her right to live in peace.

Had Linda Walker received more help from her local police and the support of her neighbours, it is unlikely that she would have been driven to take such action.

I applaud her bravery in standing up alone to the yobs she believed responsible for vandalism and theft (none of whom suffered injury) and deplore the injustice that she has received.
