Sir, Creationism has no scientific validity but this does not stop some people from believing that it does (“Royal Society and the case for creationism”, Sept 12). If a young person raises the issue of creationism in a science class, a teacher should be in a position to examine why it does not stand up to scientific investigation. This position is the same as current government policy.
Evolution is recognised as the best explanation for the history of life on Earth from its beginnings and for the diversity of species. It is rightly taught as an essential part of biology and science courses in schools, colleges and universities across the world.

I do despair,I really do. After having read Alister McGrath's excellent response to The God Delusion, called appropriately enough The Dawkins Delusion, I was amazed at how supposedly intelligent people can still insist atheism can deny the existence of God.
David, Birmingham, UK
What a muddled letter from Reiss. Yes, science teachers are obviously in a "position" to point out that the evidence shows that the creation myths in Genesis (and the Koran, etc) are myths. But the (different) "position" that science teachers ought to do this is not, alas, yet UK government policy.
Nicholas Lawrence, Oxford,
Maybe atheism and evolution are just another religion, it certaintly feels like its belivers are just as fundalmentalist, as any of Islam or Christanity, if there is no God and we evolved from nothing and will return to the dust of the earth, why are these people so up in arms about creationisn
Hugh Scott, Comber, UK
The world operates on irrationality.
David, Bromley,
I do despair I really do. After having read Richard Dawkins excellent The God Delusion I was amazed at how supposedly intelligent people can still hold on to superstitious beliefs, it's the 21st Century. What happened to logic, reason? God does not exist, at all, in any shape or form, it's silly.
Justin Barker, Mansfield, England
Not only should schools not teach creationism, in science or any other class, but their response to pupils raising it must be to emphasise the overwhelming evidence against it. It is desperately dangerous to accept irrationality, even on the excuse of cultural sensitivity.
Nick Carter, Beckenham, Kent, England
