Much has been achieved for the welfare of both laboratory and farm animals through peaceful protests and collaboration with MPs. Vivisection, though distasteful, is here to stay for as long as there is research, and much of it is for the good of both human and animal health. It is more important to maintain good relations with those concerned so that conditions within can be monitored and the welfare of the hapless animals incarcerated be controlled.

The conditions within English laboratories are, I suspect, considerably better than in many other parts of Europe. By enforcing closure of these places in this country the activists are merely sending the research elsewhere and the animals concerned to conditions that would only cause more misery.

It is a pity that these activists cannot approach the situation in a more mature and constructive fashion and not hide behind the good name of animal rights.
