Sir, During the course of this week a number of journalists have asked me about meetings with Oleg Deripaska.
During the weekend when I moved from Brussels to London and prior to me being admitted to hospital for an urgent medical procedure, a statement was released to the press which said I had had meetings with Mr Deripaska in 2006 and 2007. Some people formed the reasonable view, therefore, that my first meeting with him was in 2006. This is not the case: to the best of my recollection we first met in 2004 and I met him several times subsequently.
The Director-General for Trade in the European Commission, David O’Sullivan, has confirmed in a letter to The Sunday Times on October 16 that I made no personal intervention to support the commercial interests of Mr Deripaska. Mr O’Sullivan explained in his letter that in respect to both the nine-year debate in the EU over tariffs on raw aluminium and to anti-dumping duties on Russian aluminium the decisions were made “after the usual consultation procedures had taken place, including with industry and all 27 European member states, and were based on sound facts”.
Perhaps I should add that naturally I met a great number of business people round the world as EC Trade Commissioner. I think this adds to what I bring to my job now. I should point out that in managing my department’s business as Secretary of State I will, of course, in line with the Ministerial Code, ensure that no conflict of interest, or perception of such, arises from any of my past or indeed future contacts. In this I will be taking advice from my permanent secretary at all times. As Business Secretary I will continue to act with the public interest in mind, as the public has every right to expect.

One positive aspect of this affair is that Margaret Beckett has not yet made a fool of gordon brown.

As a matter of interest, of all the "great number of business people " Mandelson met, how many did he stay with as a guest at their homes or on their yachts for a full week? Is such behaviour appropriate for an EU Trade Commissioner whose decisions might affect the businessman he stayed with?
mike isaacs, london, england
It's the 'a statement was released to the press which said I had had meetings' that is particularly interesting. This allows M to try to shift the blame to an anonymous 'other' and slide over the fact that the statement was released by officials on the basis of what he told them.

Puke-making.

Asked to comment on Lord Mandelson's dealings with Oleg Deripaska, Gordon Brown replied, "This was already investigated by the European Commission when he was a commissioner and the answer was nothing untoward happened. That's where the story lies." Was this a Freudian slip?

What spinning. Apparantly, up to now his statements to EU and public were he just met this Russian. And he was on board as no room on shore! Really!! Now he admits they met years before. Then Mandy passed EU laws to benefit the Russian's firm, and his huge property development. Do investigate!

Businessmen always remember their first encounter with contacts and billionaires.Mandelson knows exactly when he dined with the Russian and what was discussed.Like Blair he is a master of symantics and clouding the truth.More digging will secure further forgotten incidents.

Ostensibly we live in a global village, in Britain, and, as elsewhere, we are governed by a democratically elected parliament. We have a right to expect that our representatives do not smear their integrity by indulging in devious manoeuvrings with foreign nationals. Those who do, should quit.
Michael Halpern, London, UK
Peter Mandelson just doesn't get it. Someone in his position (now, and earlier as an EU Commissioner) should not be friends with a man like Deripaska. If he does not understand why it is a sad reflection on the man. Mandelson's behaviour crossed the line and he is not fit to be in the cabinet.
Mark Kirsh, Moscow, Russia
This government has a poor record on education but it is sad that this master of words and spin should write with poor grammar.
Line four should read "... prior to my being admitted ..." as being is a verbal noun.
Bah. Why does he make it so easy to bash him?
Lester May, London , UK
Why the need to mention his 'urgent medical procedure'?
Surely Mandy isn't playing for sympathy!
No, he is just trying to cover his ass, as usual! It's all someone else's fault.
Why didn't he correct the error earlier?
Peter Grimes, London,
Perhaps I should add that naturally I met a great number of business people round the world as EC Trade Commissioner. Meeting them is one thing; staying on their yacht is another. This is a man who is now Business Secretary. The way he operated in his previous job is a legitimate concern.
Fernando, Southampton, England
Well...he would say this, wouldn't he?
David, Hemel Hempstead, ENGLAND
This letter appears to do a number of things. It corrects perceived history concerning a "best of my recollection" meeting in 2004 as opposed to 2006, thus strengthening the apparent bond of friendship time wise. It also gives a self satisfied and rather smug response to potential criticism
