Sir, I believe the Home Secretary’s proposal to deport aliens who support and/or provoke terrorism (report, August 25) is long overdue.

Aliens originating from countries where torture and suchlike practices are the norm, who are minded to enter the UK to support or provoke terrorism, will surely bear in mind the risks they run.

Those risks are for them and them alone to weigh, not for us.

Sir, You report (August 25) that the manual triggering of the bombs in London “proves that the men were not duped into becoming suicide bombers”. Is it not possible that they were duped into believing that a time-delay mechanism would enable them to disembark at the next station and escape before detonation?

This hypothesis is strengthened by the fact that one of the bombers tried to contact the others “minutes before he blew himself up on a London bus”.
