Sir, Having spent several months assisting in an attempt to register a charity concerned with the relief of people suffering from noise pollution, only to be thwarted by the Charity Commission’s claim that this is “political”, I cannot agree with its chief executive that its guidance “sets out clearly what is and is not acceptable” (“Charities are right to exercise a political voice”, April 9).

I have studied this guidance, CC9, at length and in detail; it is not merely ambiguous, but in many places contradictory.

The examples of acceptable and unacceptable activity in the guidance, whether consciously or not, have one thing in common — charitable status requires conformity to Labour party policy. Sadly, it seems to me that the Charity Commission has become wholly politicised.

Jill Kirby (Opinion, April 7) is absolutely right to draw attention to the trend of political campaigning.
