Sir, Linda Woolf regrets the demise of Latin in schools because many find it “too difficult” (letter, July 1).

Latin is a language where correct syntax matters. In scientific subjects the answers to problems are either right or wrong. This goes against the prevailing attitude of “who’s to say that you’re right and I’m wrong”. Consequentially, many take the easier path and shy away from subjects where discipline is important; even the word is taboo today. Let the discipline of Latin be restored to the curriculum; it may even encourage young people to study the sciences whose nomenclature is based on this ancient language.

Sir, I have yet to read a cogent argument for the teaching of Latin in schools. There is a case to be made; but pupils deserve more than a loose collection of unargued assertions on the lines of employers value the qualification; it helps with other languages; we still use many Latin phrases; and don’t children love films like Gladiator and Troy?

Where is their vaunted clarity when Latinists need it?
