Sir, By all means let’s have a replay of the France v Republic of Ireland match (“A replay? You must be joking”, Sport, Nov 20) and this time only players who have never dived, handled, fouled or duped the referee in their playing careers may put themselves forward for selection.

Let’s go farther and only allow commentators who have never lied on their CVs, fiddled their expenses or passed off someone else’s work as their own to report on the match. As for politicians being allowed to pass judgment on the outcome, let’s not go there.

Thierry Henry has the good and ill fortune to do his job under the glare of TV cameras. This was not his noblest deed on a football pitch, but my life would not stand up to anything like that kind of scrutiny, so I’m ruling myself out of the replay. And I’m Irish.
