Speed and road safety

Sir, How right Simon Jenkins is that “A laudable desire to promote safer driving has been hijacked by the tax gatherers” (Comment, December 10).

On Portuguese roads, where those roads require a reduction in speed on the approach to small towns and villages, a monitor on the road is activated by any vehicle exceeding the lower limit imposed, and in turn activates a set of traffic lights some 100 to 200 metres further on, bringing the vehicle to a standstill.

This system actually deals with the danger imposed by speeding vehicles, unlike the speed cameras in place in the UK, but does of course fail the apparently more important income-generation test preferred by the British Government.
