Janet Bloomfield was the chairperson of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), Europe’s largest nuclear disarmament organisation, from 1993 to 1996. She was an energetic opponent of civilian and military nuclear technology for more that 26 years.
Janet Elizabeth Bloomfield was born in Newcastle-under-Lyme, Staffordshire, in 1953 and educated at Abbeydale Grange School, Sheffield, and the University of Sussex, where she graduated in geography.
After two years with Marks & Spencer, she had a year as an administrative assistant in the North Yorkshire Area Health Authority. She took up her CND activities after 1982.
Over the years she participated in all aspects of CND’s work. Between 1982 and 1986, she was a member of the CND national council and executive committee. From 1986 to 1991 she was co-organiser of the West Midlands region. In 1991 and 1992 she was CND’s national vice-chair and in 1993 she was elected chairperson. And at the time of her death, she was an honorary vice-president of CND.
Bloomfield was particularly involved in CND’s campaign concerning the 1995 Review and Extension Conference of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), and participated in the production of CND’s Blueprint for a Nuclear Weapon Free World.
Between 1994 and 1997 she was a consultant to, and vice-president of, the Geneva-based International Peace Bureau, a network of peace organisations in 44 countries. She was also a member of the Global Council of Abolition 2000, a global campaign, involving more than 2,000 non-governmental organisations, to eliminate nuclear weapons.
Bloomfield’s activities in the peace movement took her to many countries in Europe, North America, the Far East and the Pacific. She contributed frequently to publications dealing with disarmament and peace topics.
In 1991 Bloomfield organised the effective public campaign to stop the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham putting on arms trade shows. Since 1997 she had been a freelance consultant on nuclear issues, working with the Body Shop, Charter 88, the Campaign Against the Arms Trade, the Forum for United Nations Renewal, the UK Nuclear Free Local Authorities and the Oxford Research Group.
For the last few years of her life, her main work was as the British director of the Atomic Mirror, a campaigning group which uses the creative arts (films, writing, music, images, and performance) to explain the consequences of the nuclear age, and to encourage people to campaign for the abolition of nuclear weapons. With offices in England and California, Atomic Mirror works with activists and artists to develop initiatives and joint activities.
Bloomfield was a keen member of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers). She joined the Green Party in 1996.
Bloomfield was a generous, warm-hearted person with a fine sense of humour. Her leisure interests included gardening, travel, music, and bird watching.
Her husband, a son and a daughter survive her.
Janet Bloomfield, campaigner against nuclear technology, was born on October 10, 1953. She died of a heart attack complicated by a kidney infection on April 2, 2007, aged 53
