Lord Thomson of Monifieth
Lord Ezra writes: For many years I had the pleasure of sharing an office with George Thomson (obituary, Oct 5) in the House of Lords. We frequently spoke of his time in government, in Brussels as a commissioner, and in broadcasting. His recollections were always delivered in a gentle, humorous and self-deprecating manner. He spoke well in the House, especially on broadcasting, and was listened to with attention.
We shared many views, particularly on House of Lords reform, and feared that changes now being contemplated could raise issues of power sharing with the House of Commons and would cost considerably more than at present.
We enjoyed many meals together with Grace and my wife, Julie. The converstion sparkled with the views of both of them. She thought as deeply about political affairs as he did.
Lieutenant-Colonel Mike Lowry
Philip Wilkins writes: Christmas Eve 1954 found me sharing a “two-man basha” with my company commander, Mike Lowry (obituary, Oct 2). As a 19-year-old National Serviceman I thought it a dubious honour.
For the next nine days, lying low and on cold rations within sight and earshot of the enemy, it was an uncomfortable experience. In “jungle whispers” Lowry confided his military life to date: Sandhurst, wounded on the North-West Frontier and commanding D Company, 1st Queen’s, with terrible losses at Kohima ten years before. On New Year’s Day we moved in to Keban Bharu and he won his Military Cross.
He was a strict disciplinarian, a fearless jungle soldier, revered by his troops, and it was a privilege to serve under him.
