Nigel Plews
Chris Florence writes: Your obituary of Nigel Plews (November 10) reminded me of a New Zealand Test match against West Indies in Christchurch in early 1995.
Nigel was standing in the Test and discovered I had come out from England to report on the series, being probably the only English reporter in the press box. In the relaxed atmosphere of the time he sent a message, asking to meet me at close of play.
We spent a convivial hour at the end of the day, and remained acquaintances for the remainder of his career. He was highly regarded by the game’s authorities around the world and always had time for followers of cricket, be they in Christchurch that day or nearer to home at Trent Bridge.
Miriam Makeba
James Porter writes: One important correction to your excellent account of the extraordinary life of Miriam Makeba (obituary, November 11 ). Her final performance in Britain was not in Trafalgar Square on Africa Day in 2007, but this year at the Brighton Festival. Less than six months ago, on May 21, she returned to enchant us with her music and to personally thank the people of Britain for contributing so much to the fight against apartheid. As she spoke of the cause that had animated her whole life, the young and enraptured audience danced in the aisles and up to her stage.
Although the world knew her as Mama Afrika, on that night we had been privileged to be in the presence of the indomitable Miriam Makeba as she bade her last farewell.
David Parks
Sydney E. Bell, former principal architect to the CLASP Development Group (1961 -71) writes: David Parks (obituary, November 19) was a delightful and sensitive architect to work with. However, the CLASP system was originally developed by Nottinghamshire county council under the leadership of Sir Donald Gibson and Henry Swain; originally for use in schools. It was used for the college buildings at York University.
David Parks worked with the CLASP Development Group and Pat Tindale, the chief architect at the Ministry of Housing, in developing CLASP 5, a smaller scale version of CLASP more appropriate for residential development and the prototype development was built at York University.
Rear-Admiral Sir Paul Greening
In the obituary of Sir Paul Greening (November 20) we should have said that his wife, Monica, predeceased him on February 4 this year. We apologise for this error.
