Mate - powerful stuff. All of which, brilliantly, could be discussed with Oprah when your book comes out. Am sending you some ice cubes. Rich

Brian - if you're reading this, one reason your watch may have failed is due to sweat from your arm short circuiting it. Try putting it somewhere hot and dry for a day or two; eg Nevada. Alternatively, buy a couple of new ones for $3 at Wal-Mart; you can always trade them for food once you're off the beaten track. Philip Sen

Writing a book about ecology while you travel in a 1983 Dodge Van? That's probably the worst mileage vehicle with the least reliability on the road. I hope the money you save sleeping at Walmart parking lots is not used fixing the van. Be sure to return the 8 track tapes at journeys end. Bob Carter
How ironic to see your article, Oregon-the New West as I just spent the last two weeks on the Oregon Coast. It was charming, beautiful and very west Coast. It is either a very new age place or full of hicks. There are no in-betweens. I found the most lovely area from Lincoln City to Yachats with roaring surf and long, sandy beaches. Yachats was my favourite though. It is charming and offers everything even though it is a one street wonder. It has a very cool little bakery -The Green Salmon that opens at 7:00-4:00)everyday except Mondays. The Green Salmon serves wild raspberries on home-made bread with fresh honey and mascarpone cheese or a bunch of other delightful delictables made every morning. So, yummy! And worth a trip in the morning for your espresso. You can watch the whole town come in.
