In the wake of the phenomenal response to Sky/NBC’s Battlestar Galactica TV series in 2004, and the cult, if not commercial, success of Michelle Ryan’s take on the Six Million Dollar Woman comes yet another rebooted Glen Larson classic. Knight Rider is to return to TV screens in 2008.
The original 1980s series featured David Hasselhoff as Michael Knight, a mysterious vigilante righting wrongs across a suspiciously clean America with the help of an artificial intelligence, K.I.T.T., embedded in his heavily modified Pontiac TransAm.
Hasselhoff went on to create Baywatch and became an ironic icon with an acute awareness of the nature of his appeal. The car, which all but the most pedantic viewers prefer to call K.I.T.T., has surfaced on eBay more than once: a number of TransAms were used for the show and several more have since been modified by enthusiasts to resemble the Knight Industries 2000.
The 2008 show Knight Rider stars Justin Bruening as Michael Knight’s estranged son Mike Tracer, an ex-Army ranger and creator of a new K.I.T.T. Purists are already expressing outrage that this time K.I.T.T will be portrayed by a Ford GT500KR rather than the classic Pontiac.
Ford are planning to market a limited edition replica K.I.T.T complete with Cylon-style ‘scanner’ light on the front. It’s said to be a coincidence that the 2008 5.4 L supercharged V8 Ford Shelby GT500-KR has those initials at the end of its name. The Shelby Mustang has been known as ‘King of the Road’ since its 1960s debut but fans will still no doubt draw the obvious inference.
It’s thought that the new model K.I.T.T. might even be able to ‘transform’ into a humanoid robot, although this feature is unlikely to be implemented on the retail model. Ratatouille and Grindhouse actor Will Arnett will be replacing William Daniels as the voice of the car.
The feature length pilot for the reimagined Knight Rider will premiere in the United States on February 17, followed by a full series later in the year. Hasselhoff, star of the original 80's TV show is expected to make a cameo appearance as Michael Knight.

My 5 year old loves the new K.I.T.T., but I can't say that show is appropriate for a child. The lurid and vulgar themes portrayed in the first few minutes of the show takes away from the original spirit of the show. I am outraged that Ford would allow swearing, callous murder and unconventional relationships in a family show.

personaly???? why ruin the original???? i cant believe it..its gonna ruin the good old ones i reckon...KITT is pontiac not a silly ford..and they should remain a classic in the 80's...how they will ruin the good ones..Not to happy myself..William Daniels is K.I.T.T. and hasslehoff is michael knight and i think the sequel from the series (knight rider 2000) was a flop...so now imagine the new ones...
steve, norwich, uk
They should've used a Pontiac...a heavily modified Pontiac at that.....any BLACK Pontiac just to keep the carisma of KITT...Trans Am's may be out of production for now but Pontiac may have 'done something' for the show-if not just for P.R/advertising....New KITT looks like a badly modified tin can!!! They've not even ket KITTs voice the same....fools. But, i guess everything has to be ruined in the end.....what next a pink VW beetle with a girls voice!

Whether it is a continuation of the original or not, the Mustang just does not work for me. They should have used something that can live up to the futuristic technology and image that the first series portrayed. That is what made the show so Great. The new concept Corvette or concept Camaro would have been a better choice. I'm sure that the show will still be interesting.
Lance, Lake Charles, Louisiana
I think they will never be able to beat the old show but they can sure try! They should have David Hasslehoff in it as his sons guide and as for K.I.T.T. they should use the new Camaro! It's more classic!
Justin, Portland, Oregon
Old KITT, hands down! Mustangs are great, but not for this.
Annie, Washington, DC
They should have gone with the new Camaro. Looks much better than the Mustang!
Tom, Plano, Texas
I think the idea with the car choice is for the car to be somewhat tangible for the viewer...a lot more people can afford a black trans am or mustang than a corvette.
Michael Bradley, Dallas, TX
I think the Mustang is a good choice since the idea would be to make sure the vehicle is tangible to the viewers...how many people can actually afford a corvette and how many can afford a black mustang?
Michael Bradley, michaelbradley322@yahoo.com, Dallas
I agree. If anything a ZR1 Corvette. the Mustang doesn't look right. May as well use a F100
Kevin, Brisbane, Australia
Old KITT was way better. A mustang was definitely the wrong way to go. I would have much rather ween the new Corvette ZR1 as a new KITT.
asdf, long island,
The thing that made the original KITT so appealing was that the T.A/Firebird was so futuristic back then. The car, even the street version, didn't look like anything else on the road. It made for a very apt platform on which to build KITT. But a Mustang, much less a retro-styled Mustang that harkens back to the 1960's is just rediculous. Great looking car, mind you, but hardly the model of "the car of the future" that KITT would be expected to represent. Even a Corvette would be more true-to-form for KITT.
Tom, Shreveport, LA
It strikes me, Andy from Nottingham, that you didn't read the article, but thanks for reiteration.
Rebecca Bockos, London, UK
I don't care for the newer car...in my opinion it just doesn't "fit" as being KITT. I understand the show is being treated as a sequel to the original series, but the Mustang is out of place as the new KITT. I'd have preferred if they used the newer model Trans Am/Firebird, it has a sleeker look and would at least fall in line better with the original (and look 10000% better).
Pete, Omaha, NE
I prefer the old KITT without a doubt ! They should have gone with a car similar to that one. This one looks horrible.
Ricardo Matos, Lisboa,
Criminals will be able to get away from the New KITT by driving down any suburban street - it's too pimped out to get over a speed bump!
Mikey, Bromley, Kent
This article has got it's facts all wrong. The new Knight Rider is not a re-imagining of the original show. It is a sequel, a continuation of the story, set 20 years later.
The 'new KITT' is not a Pontiac Trans-am, because it is NOT
the original KITT. It is the Knight industries three thousand,
not the Knight two thousand. Thats why it looks different (it's now a Mustang) and sounds different (voiced by WIll Arnett).
I suggest Michael Moran gets his facts right before he starts writing a load of misleading waffle that is sure to infuriate fans of the original by making them think that the new Knight Rider is a smack in the face to the shows established mythology.
The new Knight Rider respects the original TV series from the 80's and does not mess with Knight Rider canon. Even David Hasselhoff will appear as Michael Knight, as proof it this Knight Rider being a SEQUEL.
If I can get these facts right, and I live in the UK, I'm sure you guys in the States should be able to.
Andy, Nottingham, UK
