The owner of the world’s biggest collection of Trabant cars must sell them after complaints from his neighbours that they are an eyesore. Graham Goodall has 49 of the East German cars at his home in Middleton-by-Youlgrave but the Peak District National Park Authority issued an enforcement order to remove 40 of them. His appeal was dismissed by the High Court. Mr Goodall, 61, said: “It’s terribly sad. I’ve spent nearly 20 years putting this collection together.” The authority said that Mr Goodall did not have appropriate planning permission and that it had to act on the villagers’ complaints.

I don't deny that having these cars actually in use would be preferable, rather than sitting there rotting. But they are his, and surely he has the right to choose how to utilise them. I have a lot of trouble with "eyesore" complaints. By whose standard? By whose right? I - and more people than in this village - find most housing developments across the country eyesores. But they have the appropriate planning permission, despite their functional stupidity and aesthetic hideousness. Is the tenet of this case the eyesore value or that he didn't have planning permission. If so, does planning permission rely on whether it's an eyesore or not? If so, whose eyes and by what judgement?

About time too. This man has single-handedly brought Trabis - and the small & geeky but responsible Trabi community - into disrepute. This was never about Trabants - it was about village life being disrupted by a rotting pile of moss-ridden Duroplast. There actually are Trabi owners out here who love and care for our cars. Don't tar the car with this brush!
