2 Collapsible chairs

The team won’t have to eat while squatting. “It might sound like a luxury,” says Hillkirk, “but they allow you to lean back. This stops the stomach from compressing, allowing you to eat more without the risk of cramp.”

3 Stoves

Two will be carried: a small Coleman Peak unit and a heavy-duty Mountain Safety Research XGK.

4 Satellite phoneThe team will use an Iridium satellite phone to keep in touch and will also carry a locator beacon to broadcast its GPS location in an emergency.

5 Water bottles

Insulated Platypus bottles hang from the neck inside a jacket so body heat stops them from freezing. “Simply unzip a little, press the bag and suck on a straw,” explains Hillkirk.

6 Clothing

Multiple layers preserve body heat. Over several layers of thermal underwear are worn a race suit, a down duvet jacket and windproof Gore-Tex outerwear complete with a fur snood. “Nothing’s standard. We customise the kit,” says teammate Gary Bullen, “sewing in little pockets or adding cords that allow you to pull zips without taking off your gloves.”

7 Boots

Waterproof gaiters with a rubber sole and woollen inner socks, boiled and shrunk down so the fibres are very tightly meshed.
