As I write, the Grand National has just been run in a bath of warm sunshine, Chelsea have beaten Blackburn in temperatures better suited to cooking meat, and the newspapers are filled with gloating pictures of people being all wet and soggy in the Costas.
Britain, we’re told, is hotter than Athens. Which isn’t so much a piece of news as a yah boo sucks to the poor bastards who’ve shelled out for an Easter holiday in the Med.
I think this is a rather mean trait, especially since I recently spent two weeks in Barbados under a dome of grey skies and light drizzle. “We’ve never known anything like it,” said the locals, as though that might make us feel better. The Daily Telegraph certainly didn’t, with endless shots of pretty young girls frolicking in the daffodils back home. The captions didn’t say, “Hey w****** in the Caribbean. How do you feel now?”. But that was the inference.
We all want a holiday once in a while — I can’t see what’s wrong with that: it’s not paedophilia — and all we want from our holiday is a bit of sunshine. It’s not much to ask; a bit of skin cancer to go with your chablis. So why should those at home be encouraged to laugh if it’s grey and miserable?
Oh, I’m long past the age when I care two hoots about a tan. In the past I’d stake myself out on a day bed and lie there blinking the sweat out of my eyes and rubbing Mazola into my secret gentleman’s areas. This would make me look rich when I got home. But by the age of 37 I’d realised that most of my hard-earned brownness would be left in a series of unpleasant flakes on the homeward-bound aeroplane seat.
So I’d arrive back at Heathrow with one completely see-through layer of skin straining to stop my internal organs sploshing all over the luggage carousel. And I’d be in screaming agony because I always always always forgot to put sun cream on the top of my feet. So they looked like championship salamis.
And it got worse when my hair started to recede, because then my afro was no longer able to protect the top of my head. The result was that every morning my pillow was covered in what can only be described as a Guardian reader’s lunch.
That’s why I gave up sunbathing and decided to spend my time under a hat, a tree and a roof. It shouldn’t really matter, therefore, that I had lousy weather in the Caribbean this year. And yet it did. Sunshine, whether I’m in it or indoors looking at it, lifts my world and my spirits. I think more clearly, I write more coherently. I feel better.
A while back some American doctor, who wanted some money, came up with the concept of seasonal affective disorder, or Sad. You may think it’s idiotic, suggesting that people get depressed if they don’t see the sun for long periods. You may argue it’s just an excuse for Scottish miserabilism.
But genetically I think I may be 98% bear, with a sprinkling of hedgehog. All I know is that a bougainvillea bush on a grey day is just another plant. In the sunshine it can take my breath away. A well lit bougainvillea can even make Greece look civilised. Similarly, a ski resort in the cloud is one of the ugliest places on earth. And yet in the sunshine it can be one of the most beautiful.
My office window here at my holiday cottage overlooks the sea, which for most of the year is a big wobbly grey thing from which I pull lobsters. On a sunny day, however, like today, it’s a shimmering, glinting, dazzling, inviting navy blue mass of possibilities. It makes me want to run about in the fields singing.
Happily, due to circumstances beyond our control, Britain is becoming warmer and more sunny, but even now you can never bank on it. Just because you go to bed on a Friday under the dying ambers of a vivid scarlet sun doesn’t mean it’ll be there again in the morning. Red sky at night...who knows? That’s why I’ve always argued you should only plan a barbecue when it's raining. This dramatically increases your chances of it being sunny when the charcoal reaches its correct operating temperature.
And on the road, what you need is a convertible car. Yes, I know a convertible is always going to be heavier than the saloon or hatchback on which it’s based because it needs underfloor beams to replace strength lost when the roof was removed. And yes, I know that because of the weight, and the loss of structural rigidity, a convertible will never handle or accelerate quite as well as a normal car. But who cares when the sunlight is flashing its radioactive Morse code through the overhanging trees, and the morning dew is picked out in the overnight cobwebs and you have an excuse for putting on your Aviators and listening to some Don Henley.
This brings me on to the Ford Focus CC, which like most of the mid-range convertibles these days has a metal roof that folds electrically into the boot. On paper this sounds good. It means that when you’re driving with the roof up it’s as quiet and as refined as a normal saloon. And when it’s parked the roof cannot be slashed by vandals.
There are, however, some drawbacks. In order to fit into the boot a roof that is big enough to shield four adults the rear end must be as big as an aircraft carrier. You only need look at Peugeot’s effort to see the ugliness that can result.
What’s more, you are bound to end up with very little space for rear passengers, and when the roof is down almost no boot space at all.
At first it looks like the Ford suffers from all these problems and more. The extra weight, thanks to all the ironmongery, means the 1.6 litre version will barely move. Unless you want a diesel, you really have to go for the 2 litre, and even this struggles. And despite the best efforts of Ford’s chassis engineers, who are some of the best in the business at the moment, it’s not what you’d call a sprightly point-and-squirt car. It feels like you’re driving around in Al Gore.
So yes, you get the vandal-proof roof but the price you pay is limited rear space, a small boot, a dramatic loss of performance and some suet in the handling mix.
And yet, after a few days I began to like this car very much. Yes, it has the bulbous rear end, but actually when you stop and look at it, as a whole, you have to admit it’s a very elegant car. I don’t know why but it puts me in mind of a Riva speedboat parked in Portofino with an Agnelli at the wheel. It has a Sixties playboy look somehow.
And while it may not be the best handling car in the world, it rides beautifully, soaking up the worst bumps and potholes without a murmur of complaint. In short, it’s tremendously comfortable.
Of course, at this point you may be saying that you don’t care, because it’s still only a Ford Focus. True enough, but it’s built in Italy by the people who styled it — Pininfarina — and it’s available with a range of colours both inside and out that are bound to appeal.
Will it go wrong? Well, I’ve had one of the old Focuses for six years and it’s still as tight and reliable as the day I bought it. So no, I don’t think so.
It isn’t what I was expecting, the Focus CC. I thought it’d be an updated version of the old Escort cabrio, a molten banana with an Essex girl at the wheel. But it isn’t. It’s a refined, elegant, comfortable and remarkably well priced tool that’s ideal for those of us who are 98% motorist and 2% hedgehog.

Have had our CC2 since August 2008. The rear windows leaked from day 1 but nothing too major so we waited a while.January 2009 took it to Evans Halshaw Wolverhampton where we purchased from. They had it a week then March 09 they had it again for 10 weeks! June 09 now and it is back with them again!
T.Paskin, Wolverhampton,
Collected my car late Friday 24th April, and absolutely loved it. Perfect drive, everything I wanted. Sunday 26th April I am in an RAC van towing it back to the garage because the fuel pipe has shot off and won't stay on. Anyone else had this problem? Terrifying.
Mrs I Mitton, Gloucester,
ive had my cc3 2weeks now never had any problems with leaks. the car is a dream 2 drive.
mick pattinson, sunderland,
Thank god that I am not the only one having problems with leaks!!! I got my CC2 last May. Already had a leak on the passenger side repaired. Now it is leaking on the drivers side and more so when the car gets wasked. What did Ford say "they recommend that you do not use a hose as it will leak!"
Jude Johnston, South Tyneside,
I have had my CC2 for two days and I love, love love it. Could not wait to finish work today to drive it home. The Sony stereo is fab too!! And I love the colour - aua blue.
Angela, Cardiff,
I own a 'NEW' CC3! 'NEW'.. allegedly the one without a leak! But hey guess what... It's got a leak... It's been repaired with the highly effective 'NEW' repair kit! Brought out to repair the 'OLD' versions leak that no longer exists in my 'NEW' version!!! But hey guess what.. repaired it still leaks
Adelle, Stockport, Cheshire

my ford cc3 is my graduation present from my husband. Only had it a week and I love it and so do the kids. Its an 07 plate with only 2200 miles on the clock. Only had the roof down once but as a family convertable I love it - its a pleasure car, to allow you to blow those cobwebs away
Louise Johnsen, Doncaster,
Got my CC2 June 07. Fabulous car. Slight leak solved instantaneously with smear of silicone grease on front rubber seals! (please try if you have leak). Never leaked since, without need for modification, and not had a single problem since. Am thinking of getting another one this year.
Bruce, Nottingham,
Bought a ford focus cc 3 months ago and within 24 hours the roof leaked. Haven't seen it since despite repeated promises that it's coming!
Adam, Sheffield, UK
Yes i've got a CC-3 & yes mine also leaks & to top it off its got a starting problem. The cars been in the garage more times thab enough & its now away supposedly having the roof leak sorted, 6 weeks its been away & still no news. From a company as big as ford its all very disappointing!

paul ward, ferryhill, england
Ford tried to resolver my leaking roof problem by squirting some sort of black sticky sealant into the join. When it is warm this become s very sticky and strands of sticky trails can be seen when the roof retracts and now the leak is back. Has anyone else had this problem?
sandon, liverpool , Engalnd
I have just got my new car from ford dealership it's an ex demo, i was assurred that this leak situation was now resolved with the fitting of new rubber seals, guess what it's rained and i have got wet and so has my uphostery. i've had the car for 23 days and am returning it tomorrow i also have the same wind and rattle problem that the other reader has, i'm not at all happy and will not tolerate this and am happy to join any group to take on ford !

Purchased new CC2 from Bristol Street Stoke late Jan 08. Within 1 week it was back at dealership due to water leak from seal on driver's side front window and excessive wind noise from same place. Car remained at dealership for c.7 weeks before Ford picked it up to take to Newport for repair. Car returned to me last Sat 12th April, apparently repaired. Monday morning (14th April) I set off for Leeds and within 10 mins of being on motorway in rain.... yes, wind noise and early morning shower from same position. Just delivered car back to dealership (15th April) having driven CC for c.800 miles since Jan, a total of some 10 days in my possession. Dealer has been great, can't fault them for their assistance and loan of cars, but Ford have been hopeless in terms of service and customer care. Car is now rejected and I await return of money, or new car. Not holding my breath, suspect I will be taking legal advice. I suggest there needs to be a group action against Ford.

Purchased a leaky Focus CC3 in January, was sold to me with the leak, a scratch to the exterior, a chunk of plastic missing in the interior visor area, a rattle in the door and windows with a mind of their own and still I have been denied rejection of the car. I am taking it to Court. I suggest everyone does the same. There was talk of a recall on the vehicle but that is yet to come to light. People power, come on the more people complain the more likely it is to happen.
Vikki, Bexleyheath, Kent, England
we bought one last April, we had problems with leaks over both doors. We returned it to the dealer to repair about a month after we bought it and they tried to fix but couldn't. They said they were waiting for parts from Italy. We waited about another 3 months and then they fixed it, no problems since. Great car we love it.
B Crean, Plymouth, UK
I recieved my CC-3 on the 14th of December 07. On the 1st day of rain (Dec 21st) it leaked badly at the driver & passenger side of the car. The car was returned to the dealership on the 14th of Jan 08 for onward transport to Ford for repairs. The car was returned on the 18th of March (64 days later) with not only the roof repairs faulty but also-dent on the front nearside wing, paint scratches on the roof, boot, and rear off-side wing, dent and paint damage on the drivers door. All damage was reported to Ford at the time of vehicle return and supported by the dealer and photo's. Ford had said they will put right all faults and call me today 25/03/08.
Of course there has been no call and I have just decided to reject the car and insist on a full refund. I hope they refuse as I have 4 lawyers in my family waiting for a call.
Brian Green, Eyemouth, Berwickshire
I collected my new Focus CC3 4 weeks ago. I now have a bad leak over the driver and passenger side of the car. TC Harrison Ford say they have no reports of anything similar, which I find this hard to believe reading the other reports on this sight. I still enjoy my new car, but the leaks have marred the enjoyment. Hopefully it will only take one visit to the Ford garage for the problem to be resolved.
Linsey Hogg, Ramstein, Germany
coltook a focus cc in september o7 roof has leaked every day we have had rain and in this country thats a lot. have been back to the dealer 7 times each time claiming they have repaired it no such luck . no one seems to know what the hell is going on , can any one tell me ,im feeling fed up i really wanted to love this car but feel badly let down both by the dealer and fords customer care who both fob me off and promise to return my callls but never do . paula very upset
colin atkinson, warrington, england
I received my cc-3 a year after I ordered it. It had been registered 2and half months before I received it! It has been back in for repair 3 times (is currently in now - has been for 29 days this time, so far!) In total I have not had the car for 21 weeks since it was registered at the end of May 2007. Initially the problem was a wind noise on the drivers side, then the leak came in January! I have been given a loan car of a fiesta and fusion, which is a long way off the CC! I have spent a lot of money on this car and the insurance - a lot more than a fiesta would have cost me! The ford customer care team are not supportive. They tell me different information each time. They promise to call and do not, well eventually 3 weeks later, but with no news! They refuse to pass you on to a senior manager. I think that enough is more than enough now and I should be offered a replacement.
Karen, Coventry,
I live in Spain and have had my CC for 7 months.
I have the 2 litre diesel and i love it.
It does leak on the odd occasion, but as it´s the only one around here, I get all the looks.
Simon Mullish, mMlaga, Spain
bought my cc3 4weeks ago so far no problems (and it certainly has rained somwhat since i took delivery) 2ltr petrol bit thirsty but it all depends how you drive it. Having discoverd the leeking roof problem i have payed special attention to the seals, look ok at the moment but have contacted ford to make them aware that im aware.we shall see if thecome up with a fix i hope so.......................
mick, enfield, uk
I also have the cc and mine also leaks. I was assured by the garage mine was one of the "fixed" ones and there would be no problem , HUH! it has been back twice and is due to go back again Monday for the third time i am getting a bit sick of it, if i wanted to drive round in a KA ( the loan car) i would have bought a KA . The car is 3 months old.
Norma Sales, Whitley bay, England
we purchased a cabriolet in may ,it started to leak , the rear seats and speakers were soaking, ford do not seem to know what to do, we were offered a repair, but we were aware that these probems existed and was not a one off, after contacting trading standards , cab, consumer direct ,who advised us we could reject the car if we let were reasonable and let ford have an attempt to repair, the dealerships do have a commit package which they forward off the job sheet to ford with relevant paperwork, for a refund but how long this takes and depreciation we decided to trade car in, miss the cabriolet but cannot be bothered with the bad service ,and the car would never be the same again ,
gilly, lancashire,
I bought my Ford Focus Cabriolet in Sept '07 and love it bar the fact that the roof leaks at he front join over the passenger and drivers doors. it has been in the garage6 times and although the dealer has been trying to fix it I wonder where I stand with Ford if it cannot be fixed. Do we get a full refund?
Yvonne Dundee
yvonne, dundee, scotland
Well I wish I'd never heard of the Ford Focus CC! I ordered mine in September 06 and it was finally delivered in May 07!
Since August it's been in the garage at least 7 times so far for excessive wind noise, leaking roof and a faulty window!
The faults I can cope with as long as I feel they are being dealt with professionally. However Ford's Customer Relationship Centre leaves a lot to be desire. I have never come across such appalling customer service - Ford you should be ashamed of yourselves. Not only that I am dealing with two Ford dealerhsips over this issue and they are just as bad at returning calls and keeping you informed.
I have driven Ford's for 25 years now, I waited two years for the CC to be launched because I didn't want to go to another make, this time they have lost the plot - and my custom.
I am now waiting to see if I can get my money back and then Ford won't see me for dust! Such a shame as I had such high hopes for this car.
Coral, Lincoln, UK
I've got the 2L diesel and haven't had a problem with it atall. A very comfortable ride , very economical and a good looking car. Not alot of room for passengers in the back, but we didn't buy it for that reason! As long as it's not raining, the hood is down!! Love it!
whitcombe, oakdale, wales, uk
had to wait nearly a year to get my cc2 ,took delivery in august it had 2 leaks both sides where roof joins above windscreen ,hendys in shirley [southampton where i live]fixed them,we have had rain this week & last week & it has,nt leaked, lovelly car ,the seats are really comfortable, petrol consumption not bad, love driving it.
dave humphries, southampton,hants, uk
Well I took delivery of my CC2 on Thursday and although disappointed with the colour (grenadine red - it's not as rich as I thought it would be) it is growing on me. I had to drive the car 400 miles (in the pouring rain - and no the roof didn't leak) on the first day from Swindon up to Falkirk. The new seats are a dream - perfect for relieving long trip pains. Was also stuck in Birmingham traffic for a few hours but the car was easy to keep ticking along - no clutch leg stress.
We've had the roof down for the past couple of days (yes there has been sunshine up here!) and I gotta say - it's my first coupe/cabriolet and I'm having fun! As long as it's not raining the roof will be down.
For those who've complained about the 'flapping noise' - connect the rear seatbelts into the holder - that's where it's coming from!
Yvonne Harley, Falkirk,
I brought a CC3 end of April, fantastic car while the sun shone!! But when the rain came I discovered I had brought a car with a built in shower!! Took it back to the dealers beginning of June and have not seen it since. Ford have put me in hire car, An S Max, hardly a match. The dealers has been great but they cannot do any more than follow Ford's directives. Am now trying to reject the vehicle through the finance company. Watch this space.
Peter, Chesham, UK
I ordered a CC2 on FEBRUARY 5th, it is now AUGUST 14th, does any body know where they are
JOHN ECCLESTON, BIRMINGHAM, WEST MIDLANDS
We purchased our Focus CC3 in May, and yes it too leaks. In June it was taken into the garage workshop for repair. Last Saturday we went to look at the car. All the interior had been taken out ie chairs and lining. The man in charge said they had fixed 3 of the 4 leaks but admitted that the technician didn't really know what he was doing. We have now, a week later, just had a call to tell us we can now have the car back but we have refused due to all the wear and tear and loss of confidence in the car. We have not had one word from Ford even though we have been promised on numerous occasions that someone will ring.
Upset, Manchester,
For anybody that's interested i started an internet forum purely for the Focus CC, a kind of owners club with great members and growing steadily. If you already have one, have ordered one or are just thinking about it, take a look at www.focusccforum.co.uk
NitroSi (Thats my user name on there)
See ya
simon, Aveley, UK
I bought one! it doesnt leak but then again, its had the rework. Yes I had to wait for it but bravo to the dealer for being upfront and honest, Ya boo, to for for dithering!!!!
I've got the diesel which seems to be the pick of the bunch. plenty of torque and plus 40 mpg! I've had a few convertables and I can tell you the focus CC is a good 'un. its warm enough and comfortable enough to have the top down on a cold and murky day, wearing just a t-shirt, especially with the optional wind deflector. Ford are going to sell a shed load of these, and rightly so! Eos? expensive, especially when you throw in the extras. Twintop? nah, sorry, it just doesnt do it for me. I tried them all and have to say the Focus drove better than the others, with less scuttle shake and less fuss. It works for me and thats all I care about. The styling may well be an acquired taste but then again, so is Don Henley. Good one Ford!!!!!
Scratch, Salisbury, Wilts
I ordered a CC2 diesel in March, no sign of it yet. Anyone got an update?
Nicola Bird, Swindon, UK/Wilts
Hi
We have also had our Focus CC on order since March. It is shocking that a major car manuafacaturer can lauch a vehicle that is unfit for sale. Why are they being allowed to get away with this? We have written to Ford and had no response. We will certainly expect compensation.
Pat, Baldock, Hertfordshire
I have had my Focus CC2 for three months now and am very disappointed in the build quality. With the roof up, there is a hugely-annoying flapping from the rear boot area as if there's a loose parcel shelf (which there isn't) and it has now developed a creaking noise not unlike an old tree bending in the wind. The dealer couldn't find what was causing the flapping noise, so that's still there, but tells me the creaking is a "known issue" and Ford is currently preparing a special lubricant which they hope will resolve the problem.
I have had minor leaks but until now just thought the water was dripping from the top of the door when it opened. You have to be very careful when washing the CC as water enters through the window seal between the front and rear glass. This hasn't proved a problem when driving, however.
The interior trim gets marked at the slightest touch.
I am actually embarrassed to take anyone out in what I thought was going to be my dream car. Not good enough Ford.
Glencairn, Dundee, UK
I currently work for a Ford dealer in sales and unfortunately there are issues with the roofs on the CC. Ford have put a stop sale on the vehicle which is as frustrating for us as it is for you! We are no wiser than anybody else as to how to fix the problem at this time, and are currently awaiting some fix from Ford/Pininfarina.
The car itself is fantastic and I am sure if you have the patience to wait for yours you will be completely satisfied with the vehicle. The car itself knocks spots off all the competition, and as the VW dealer said to me the other day," I had to come and see for myself as I'm losing so much business to this car and now I can see why"!
Simon, Bristol,
I purcahsed a cc3 in Jan and was told i would have it by early April, its now coming to the end of June. I was told my car was in Southampton, 3 weeks ago, but it has now to go to Dagenham for the room to be tested for leaks. Leaks i thought, of all the other makes of CC's on the road that have not got this problem, why on earth have FORD. I was told that when the conception of this car was first made they used first class parts, and now to try to save money they are using inferia parts, other words cutting corners at the expense of the customer. I called ford after service and they were as much use as a chocolate fire guard.
I was told by my salesperson, that for compensation, ford were offering a 3 years free servicing. All well and good, but i would of liked to have the car for this summer to get the benefit of the open top, but i'm not holding my breath on it happening. If i dont get a positive response from FORD then i will strogly think of cancelling my order.
David Forster, Havant, Hants
I so wish I had checked out this site before buying my CC. I purchased an ex-Demo model from the local Ford garage about 5 weeks ago. Love the car...drives lovely and all the demo model extras are great, BUT...the roof leaks like you wouldn't believe. Currently getting the run-around from the garage. Looks like Ford aftercare is shocking all over the place!
Charlet Stephenson, Darlington, UK
Well, I've had one on order since early February, when I paid my deposit. Ford has contacted me and advised me that they now put a 'stop' on delivery of all undelivered vehicles. They cannot tell me when the vehicle will be ready for delivery. Therefore, I can only assume that they have gone back to the drawing board. By the way, I have read an on-line review from a journalist who took one out for a test drive last August. And yup, the roof leaked then. I am amazed that Ford put this vehicle into mass production. Ford has advised me that they will offer me three years free servicing if I agree not to cancel the order.
brett bradshaw, worcester,
I have one to and YES the roof LEAKS! The after care service from Fords is terrible. I have now run out of patience and have decided to go public. I have contacted Watchdog and GMTV I urge eveyone who has one to do the same. The more people that report this the more chance we have of getting help
Michelle, ESSEX, UK
We bought one new two months ago, almost imedeatly it was back in due to the rood leaking. I have just got off the phone from the MD of the Ford chain we purchased from who told me Ford are not happy with the fix Pinifarina have come up with so its back to the drawing board. Wife has been driving around in one of thier cars with still no idea of when this situation is going to be fixed. To be fair dealer has offered full refund, so we will see.
Ashley, Malmesbury, Wiltshire
Yes our roof leaks too, although it is actually not the joins between the panels but the seals along the tops of the windows. I asked the dealer for a hat but none was forthcoming. Actually the dealer service is appalling. I took it in about the leaking roof and with a fake look of surprise they said 'oh really'. The guy on the parts desk however said they all have come back leaking, even the sales guy said his demonstrator leaks. So they had it for a week and did nothing, yet when I picked it up they said it was fixed. When I spoke to the service manager the next day after a bit of persuasion he admitted that they did not know how to fix it. To top it off the car was returned covered in birds muck that has etched into the paint!
Chris, London, UK
We bought one and rejected it after a month during which time the dealer had it for repairs more than we had it to drive. The roof leaks like a sieve and Ford don't know how to fix it. If you've got one ordered then take my advice and get your deposit back. Our dealer was excellent and gave us a full refund for the car. Ford Technical don't know how to fix the problem so what chance do the dealers have? Get your money back and get an order in for a different make of car while there is still some summer left!
Ruth, Cornwall,
We bought ours on April 4, by the end of this week it will have been back at the dealers for 30 days of the 60 days that we have owned it. It leaks like hell, but drives great especially if you change the steering settings to Sport.
Newer models seem to have different roof seals but Ford have been hopeless and the dealers worse. Do not buy one before you have sprayed it with water continuously for 10 minutes. The leaks set the alarm off so you just cannot leave it outside.
Nice car, poor build, poor service, dealer who does not care. Lawyers at the ready!

Don Henley...Wayfarers, Cadillac with the top rolled back, Grateful Dead bumper sticker...heading down to the Sunset Grill. Enough Hollywood iconography?
Martin Hayman, London,
I have just driven a Focus CC3 and it's great. Lovely car, well made, and much better looking than some other CCs, especially the ultra-ugly 307.

To say the focus CC-3 (sounds more like a name for an aeroplane) is better looking than a 307 is, in my eyes, like saying jeremy is better looking than kelly brooke on a good day, but then im a bloke and so maybe my opinion on convertible slowmobiles is a bit worthless...and mayb the girls do think jeremys gorgeous?
ally, Coventry,
Why oh WHY won't the sell this in the US?
They sell the Eos here, and it's an American company, yet we don't get to play with this fun little economical convertible.
Gus, Los Angeles, USA / CA
i think it looks so ugly and with so much competition about why would anyone want to focus cc. i think the Eos if you want 4 seats and the SLK or TT if you only need 2 are the only open tops worth having

As an employee of the company that produces Mazola in North America, I would like to thank you for your support. Many of my fellow employees are enjoying your article, or at least that paragraph thereof, immensely. :)

The Focus CC is a rather pleasant looking vehicle. I believe Ford have choosen an excellent stylist but i do however wonder what the Focus CC could of looked like if Ford had choosen Guigiaro to do the styling? I have been a "Ford man" since i was a kid and have seen them grow in terms of styling a lot, the current range of Fords are by far the better looking vehicles on the road in their price range.
All in all I feel Ford could of given us more in the way of a mid-range convertible, they have the capability to put out really eye-catching beauty's! but what they are doing instead is playing safe and giving us a pleasant looking convertible that leaves us wanting.

Jeremy is right. This is a car that inexorably grows on you. After 8000 miles in one I find myself fully dialled into the CC way of life. I regret Jeremy's inference that I will be transformed into a 60's playboy, but with English summers playing the on-off trick of rain and shine this car does deliver. Furthermore it has a boot (boring as this may sound) that copes with the real world - including those runs to the airport with either two large heavy bags or a plethora of little ones depending on your choice of airline.

Yep, that holiday has realy got to him!
Harry, Southampton,
I used to wonder how Clarkson, as a mere journalist, albeit an extremely well-paid one, could have afforded a Ford GT. Now I know.
Cynic, Cynicingham,
A Gentleman Jeremy is NOT, a gorgeous bloke he absolutely, definately, irrevocably IS, and if he ever wants a 'well-spoken woman' to join the 'well-spoken man' on the board...call me

Pininfarina have designed a gem.. this is a beautiful cabriolet, without doubt the pick of the current bunch. I stood in the showroom when i popped in to add another ford to our company fleet and i had to double check i really was in the ford dealership.
I really do think that the ford marketing boys have missed a trick in not rebranding the model with a different, sexier , gruntier name.
Being called a ford focus with its middle management company car image is going to put off a lot of potential purchasers .

Hm. What's Clarkson's next car purchase going to be?

The holiday has had a good affect on him. An article without much abuse, I'm impressed.

Jeremy has demonstrated why no male over 26 can drive a convertible. Do you really want to drive along with everybody knowing that you listen to Don Henley? You may as well hold up a sign saying "senile and incontinent".
Simon, Melbourne, Australia
Actually with Don Henley it would have to be a Honda Accord
andre, San Francisco,
Sorry to be picky, but with Don Henley it would really have to be Wayfarers...
Paul, Cape Town,
It's good to see that Clarkson's provoking style always get responses. Some people have never heard about the concepts of '2nd degree' or even a thing called 'humour'...
Anyway, about the car: isn't Clarkson going soft? I hope not...

Hi,
I've spent 5 years in England and I'd rather have the Greek sunshine despite the inferior level of "civilization" (what is the definition of civilization? the money/head or the living quality?) than the 2-week UK summer and the constant rainfall for the rest of the year. Yes, sunshine makes you be more optimistic and enjoy life! Sunshine makes you forget the low level of "europiness" of Greece and feel good about it!
Nevertheless, I think you are a great writer and I really enjoy your column.

I can't say that I hate the idea, especially when the notion of an 'affordable' convertible is available to those of us who don't want to look like a cock in a TT, or at least with us in America, the idiot who bought a Sebring. The drawbacks overall seem minimal, as it is already a stunning car with the roof on, and with the roof off it looks surprisingly good. Sure, you're losing a bit of trunk/boot space, but thats what the back seats are for. Just ask anyone with an old VW Cabrio or even the new Pontiac G6 Convertible, they'll tell ya the same story. Quite frankly, its a shame we won't see it in America. Beyond that, we probably won't even see the MKII Focus. Ford wonders why they're having a hard time selling cars in the US, and the answer is right here; Give us the 'good' Focus, add the convertible, and while you're at it give us the Mondeo as well...

This column is an example of everything I love about Jeremy Clarkson's writing. When he says "my hard-earned brownness would be left in a series of unpleasant flakes on the homeward-bound aeroplane seat" it absolutely makes me squirm, but when i read "the sunlight is flashing its radioactive Morse code through the overhanging trees, and the morning dew is picked out in the overnight cobwebs and you have an excuse for putting on your Aviators and listening to some Don Henley" i realized that there was absolutely nothing truer in the world and had to go out and enjoy the day with the top down.
Whatever else people may have to say about him, Clarkson is an absolutely brilliant writer, and puts together words and sentences in a most marvelous fashion, and is actually the only reason i read the times.
