It’s not exactly a looker but then Angelina Jolie probably isn’t much good at getting the kids to school in the morning. The R 500 is a genuine breakthrough vehicle with the luxury of a saloon, the space of an MPV and a boot the size of Belgium. Pick the long wheelbase version and it becomes bigger than the Belgian Congo. Four-wheel drive means it’ll not only take you and your family to the ski resort but also negotiate the snow while you’re there. More importantly it offers the driving refinement you’d expect from a Mercedes carrying a 50 grand price tag.
Mercedes R-class: The range has only recently gone on sale in Britain. There are both long and short wheelbases available but only one diesel and two petrol engines. Prices range from £38,470 for the 3.5 litre petrol R 350 (the 3 litre diesel R 320 CDI is £5 more) to £51,490 for a long-wheelbase R 500 with SE or Sport trim. It is built at the Mercedes factory in Alabama.
I've had the R350 for the last two years I have to say I have mixed feelings - its quick, has S class quality and a cavernous boot but the rear bucket seats are a joke as you lose ability to transport 5 without row 2 up and with the 2nd row seats up the boot is not even 12 inches deep - go for LWB

These cars are terrible - I should know having just put up with one for 9 months. The seats are dreadful, the gearstick is where the indicator should be, the rear windscreen is tiny, the boot disappears when the 3rd row of seats are used and they depreciate at an ungodly rate (even though I bought my second hand saving GBP15k from list I still lost a further GBP1k a month. Even Mercedes can't give them away!

This bizzaroworld creature is fairly rare in the US,for very good reasons.IF,that's IF you think this is a great concept for a transportation device-there is a "car" that is US dollars is barely mare than 1/4 the price-and is chuck full of MB parts and engineering. It is the Chrysler Pacifica.SAME concept, better styling.I do not own one,but did rent one at thew 'Vegas airport and drove it all over the West for 10 days.I got 25 mpg, while driving 85 mph in "normal" mode.it was rock-solid,as comfy as a car can be.My cranky in-laws were hauled from St,george,UT to Salt Lake City, and admitted to being VERY comfortable.Told them I rented the thing just for them.
I think the long-wheelbase version looks too much like a funeral coach. For 10K GBP,you can drive off with a Pacifica and be happy-in the USA,atleast.Y'all come,ya hear !!!
