Mercedes doesn’t need a fancy name like Touring or Avant to hide behind, it just calls this E 320 CDI what it is: an estate. And if it’s a conventional estate you want rather than a crossover like the R-class, this is the best there is. It boasts the largest loading bay in the class, a superb diesel engine and chassis but, best of all, exactly the right image.
Mercedes E-class: The estates are expensive, the cheapest costing £28,825, but they hold their value, especially if diesel powered. At the top of the range is the E55 AMG at £65,995, which would be capable of 200mph were it not limited to 155mph.
Maybe not Mr Connell but you can by a mid nineties diesel MB Estate for about 4K keep it for five years and sell if for 3.5K. Where else can you get depreciatio like that and total comfort? Mine had 180000 when I bought it and now has 240,000. So far it's cost me only tyres and battery. that's why they're so sought after and no electronics to go wrong.

I bought a 1995 Merc. 124 two liter estate three years old. After ten years it has 180,000 odd miles up, continues to do what it says on the tin and still drives like new, having been used as a builder's van by me for most of that time. Problem....would a newer replacement be half as good ?

My all round favourite. I own a 1988 300TD and it refuses to die even after 130,000 miles and 20 years. I like it even more now than the day I got it. It's exactly the right size, not too large or small, not too flash or plain.
When and if it does die, I'll simply purchase a new one in the same shade of bluish-gray, and continue on with my life. I do have to question whether today's model will provide such long life and faithful service as my car has.

What a ridiculous comment Dearden. So your 10 year old beater costs less.
It couldn't hold a candle to any of the estates on this board.

Big deal! The same shape as my 1997 BMW Touring. Mine cost me only £3000.00, with new engine, clutch, coolant system and brakes.
