Not so much a bad car, just an extremely boring one. Peugeot targeted the 407 at people who are old but want to feel young. Unfortunately, it has the zip of a chairlift. With plodding performance and steady-as-she-goes handling the only thing this car will make you feel like is a cup of Horlicks with a splash of hemlock. Empty-nesters should buy a PlayStation instead, and spend the afternoon shooting crack whores.
Peugeot 407 Coupé: Prices start at £21,900 for a basic 2.2 litre four-cylinder petrol engine and rise to £30,900 for the top of the range diesel. Pick of the petrol models is the 3 litre version at £28,400.

i just want the 2.7v6 HDI for my 405 estate. i love that car
Max, High wycombe, UK
Further to my earlier comment, Peugeot have since replaced the front tyres under warranty. The car is now smooth, quiet, and just as refined as any prestige German car. Peugeot customer service have been first class in their determination to resolve this problem.

My V6 2.7 Coupe is a terrific car. However, at just 20k miles the tyres are very noisy especially at low speeds on smooth roads. Peugeot have replaced the front bearings, reversed the wheels and adjusted the tracking but still that awful tyre noise persists. Does anyone else experience this?
D Wensley, Droitwich, England
I've had my V6 2.7 HDI for 2 years now. Would rather be doing the morning commute in it than anything, but best is the sports mode on an open road. Smooth and quiet with great sound and equipment. However, I have to agree with LC, an Aston it isn't!
John Roberts, Godalming, UK
407 Coupe 2.7 HDI is brilliant car ,terrific engine and quiet and relaxing on long trips and that's from a Jag driver.
Brian Shaer, London, U.K
I love mine - I simply could not find a better coupe and the satnav is brilliant - I also think it is more thank fast enough and handles fine - great space inside too - the best part is that it is rare and unique on the road without costing a fortune - The Germans have NOTHING to compare with it.
Neil, Perth, Australia
To go to Tescos....what a laugh..... its that huge you cant park em at Tescos !!!!
407 Coupe, awesome car, what more can i say and im not an old person, im 32 !!!
Lets face it, this review is an OPINION of one person.
Vikki Crossley, Heysham, Lancashire
Sorry Nigel, but you are wrong wrong wrong.
My grandparents went and brought one, and they only use it to go down to tesco's.
that is what the car is designed for.
End of.

I am a little younger than you and my main mode of transport is a Range Rover Vogue, so I am not a boring car owner. I have been looking for a second car mainly for my sole use with a little better economy. Budget isnt an issue.
I shortlisted the BMW 635d, the new Jaguar XF ( yes I have already driven it ) and the Peugeot V6 2.7 coupe. The BMW is superb, but by the time you put the essential extra's on it costs £ 55k. The Jag has a hard ride and I couldnt get comfortable, there was nowhere to rest the arms while still in contact with the wheel, but it is value for money.
The Peugot is rare, practical, has all the gadgets as standard, has a good engine, is extremely comfortable and costs £25k. Admittedly the centre console looks cheap and is cluttered ( Peugot if you are listening, improve this and you have a real winner), but for people like me that dont want a sports car but a good GT in the true meaning of the word then there is nothing but the 407 for less than £50k
Nigel Park, Canterbury,
We don't get Peugeot's here in the USA anymore so I can't comment on the performance. But I do want to know why all current Peugeot's have that zit of a badge placed on the hood of their cars. This is a styling element that is an afterthought as though they said, " Oh we forgot to design the car with a badge!! where do we put it now it's ready for production, just slap it on the nose, now they know it's a Peugeot". If they had a discrete Lion badge on the hood the car would look a lot better.

I am a proud owner of a 407 Coupe 2.7 V6 GT and think the car is amazing! I havent had anyone in it or seen it that hasnt been blown away! Big budget prestige brand lovers (ie the germans) will find it hard to accept that they had to pay so much for the same refinement! Not to mention that there was no optional extras for my car! Why? Coz they are already there! A few £K saving there compared to the Germans! Jeremy's review is the only one that slates this car! I think if you're going to review a car genuinely you should keep your personal views on manufacturers exactly that...personal!

I always enjoy JCâs ramblings with a great deal of mirth. However, being the proud owner of a 407 Coupe 2.7 V6 SE, I am compelled to respond to his latest missive on the said car. How many chairlifts has he seen that will do 145mph? On second thoughts, knowing Jeremyâs passion for pizza, pasta and pork pies, he must be an authority on chairlifts! Finally, a warning to all those CLK, 3 Series Coupe, and A5 owners. Do not drive the French car! Itâs more painful than a squash ball in the testicles, to discover that you have just paid up to £15k over and above the price of the Peugeot, merely for fairy dust. Ouch!

As one car mag commented when they first tested it. It looks a bit like a gay shark from the front three quarter view!
John, glasgow, uk
Have driven a 407 Coupe GT for the last year and it is a real head turner as as well as cheap to service at 20000 miles £135.00.
Leaves most other cars behind from a standing start.
Where does Clarkson get off giving opinions on a car he has probably only only driven for a few hours.
Best car I have ever driven and I have had a few.
Jon Brereton, Portadown,
Lies. All lies. Poor reliability and the Which mag also said it was boring ("easy on the eye"). Poor dealer satisfaction.
Down with French cars.
Andrew, Dunfermline, Scotland
As the happy owner of a 406 coupe V6 automatic the 407 coupe has no appeal, mainly because it's lost the clasic lines of the 406 and looks cumbersome in comparison. There's nothing I would change it for within a reasonable price range, particularly as I am 87.
Stephen Vickers, Sudbury, Suffolk
Clarkson dosn't like Peugeots (for some reason). Read any other review of this car- they're gleaming.
paj, gay,
Unfortunately we can't all afford exotic cars like Mr Clarkson,
I Suggest you read the "What Car" reviews on the 2.7 coupe - The people who are driving them think they are fantastic as one reviewer said - not everyone wants a "bellybutton car" (i.e everybody has got one)
P.S my own car is a 406 Coupe.

Ian Race, Walsall, UK
The original 406 coupe was a timeless wonder, that was very fast in it's modestly styled V6 form. But this is just a mass of plastic horridness.
