The Exige is like the Peperami advert, a bit of an animal. Under the bonnet is the reason: a supercharged 1.8 litre Toyota engine allied to the ultra-nimble, superlight chassis. There are few luxuries inside — although a lot more than the original Lotus Elise, which had all the comforts of a dentist’s chair — and to get the best out of it you have to take it onto the track once in a while. One thing, though — it comes with skinny front tyres to create understeer. Fit grippier fat ones. It’s even more fun that way.
Lotus Exige: The limited edition 240R has now been replaced by the new Exige S. Although not as powerful, 218bhp against 240bhp, the new model costs £10,000 less. The standard 189bhp Exige costing £29,995 is also available.

I disagree
I feel that this Exige maintains Lotus' tradition of speed and superior handling through light weight and aerodynamics. Also, remember: the car is not designed just for looks; the entire car generates downforce strong enough to plant it upsidedown at 200mph, and it met crash regulations

Jeremy, I have to agree that the Exige is a hoot and one of the best chassis ever made, but those looks!! The original Elise and especially the Vauxhall VX220 where contemporary, clean and uncluttered, but the Exige is just plain ugly. Lotus used to pride itself in simple designs, with the Exige you just donât know where to look, every panel has an oversized element with vents and lights from another car. I hate to say it, but it looks like a poorly developed kit car from the 70âs!!!

Sedately approaching a traffic signal in the old XJS, came to a stop behind one of these as it was mobbed by a dozen urchins exiting a D&D parlour.
Some cars do create excitement!
