Thousands of cars were being recalled by a leading manufacturer yesterday because of a fault with the handbrake, which has led to dozens of cars rolling away from where they were parked.
Drivers of more than 79,000 Honda Civics were being urged to have their cars checked after the manufacturer received several complaints and started an investigation.
Engineers found that there was a small safety risk if the release button was knocked by drivers when applying the handbrake. Honda has promised owners a free handbrake to solve the problems.
A spokesman for the company confirmed yesterday that it was sending letters to all Civic customers in Britain advising them to take care when applying the handbrake.
The spokesman said: “As a responsible manufacturer we felt it was important for us to inform our customers as soon as possible. We are asking customers to visit their local Honda dealer and have a new handbrake fitted free of charge. We appreciate that this is an inconvenience for customers.”
The design flaw applies to Civics that were built between 2006 and 2007.
The Civic is the biggest-selling model for Honda, with about 100,000 a year being produced at its factory in South Marston, near Swindon, Wiltshire, since 1994.

Jeremy, just HOW SAFE are electric/electronic handbrakes? Parking problems aside, what about DRIVING ? For mere mortals not endowed with supernatural driving skills like yourself, how do we do a hill-start at a busy intersection? Could a learner pass Driving Test in a car with an elec handbrake?
Brian, Worcestershire, UK
I've just found my new Ford Galaxy parked in my garage door after having rolled down my drive. The hand Brake was applied when I parked it. I have heard that after 10-15 mins of parking your breaks cool and contract there by releasing the brake.
Thank goodness it was not parked on a steep hill.
Colin Martin, Devon, UK
Catherine - you should always leave your car in gear when parking on an incline, irrelevent of whether it's a Civic with a dodgy handbrake or not! Handbrakes have often been been a failure point int he past, and simply by placing it in gear you can guarantee your car will be where you left it.
Matt, Hitchin,
This problem may not apply to just Civic's. My Jazz (on a 54 plate) was parked on a slight sloping road for 10 minutes before the handbrake failed and it rolled into a house. Car severly damaged, house front partly demolished. Thankfully no one hurt. Honda dealer informed next day and said not a complaint they had heard of in the Jazz previously. They have agreed to check the brakes out when car is repaired but not hint of anything else.

If your handbrake is not strong enough to hold the car on a hill it should not have passed an MOT. There should be no need to put the car in gear at all.
Alex Ritchie, Salisbury, UK
I might be going crazy, and opinions may differ but aren't you supposed to leave your car in gear if you park on a slope? I always leave my car in gear - hand brakes simply aren't strong enough...
Catherine, Tring,
I had my Civic [bought july '07] for almost a week, before it rolled down a hill.
Honda refunded me my excess on the insurance, [Car came to rest into a small tree] but that was all.
But I received a letter about the Handbrake months ago.
I don't think they knew at the time how many of us had this problem.
Carrie, London,
This was old news long before Christmas when Honda sent a letter and advice to every owner of a Civic affected.
mark, South Coast, UK
What a contrast with GM - a similar problem with Vectras produced a response along the lines of "its the fault of the customer". Ditto Renault with Clio bonnets flying open. Well done Honda.
