Enthusiasm for fast cars – really fast ones, the ones that can break the speed limit three times over with horsepower to spare – has always outpaced the ability to pay for them.

Doing their best to meet that untapped demand, supercar clubs have brought Ferraris and Aston Martins to those without the means or inclination to buy them outright, but the fees are still steep and the commitment substantial. Now, a variation on the supercar club idea promises a slightly more casual encounter with a supercar – or six of them.

An Oxfordshire company called dreamcarhire.com has come up with a tantalising concept it calls the Six Car Supercar Day, a monthly event that will put non-millionaires behind the wheels of Ferraris, Lamborghinis, Aston Martins and Bentleys. Participants spend about an hour in each as they play their part in a grand supercar relay through Gloucestershire and Oxfordshire.

The day starts with bacon sandwiches and a common-sense safety briefing, before six excited drivers strap themselves into their first car of the day. Pre-programmed sat-navs plot out a 200-mile course that winds its way through the meadows and hamlets of the Cotswolds, but drivers are free to meander and enjoy the drive – the company is refreshingly relaxed about handing over its £100,000 cars. The only requirement is that people reach the changeovers at the appointed time, so that everyone gets a fair share of the cars.

And you wouldn’t want to miss out on any of them. We drove a Ferrari F430, a Lamborghini Gallardo Spyder, an Aston Martin DBS, an Audi R8, a Bentley Continental GT and a Porsche 911 Turbo (Type 997). The fleet has recently been updated and the Lamborghini Gallardo Spider has been replaced with a Lamborghini LP560, which means we really need to do the whole thing again…

Sadly, that’s probably not an option. This may be the least expensive way of spending a day with cars that cost more than your house, but you’ll still need a comfortably padded wallet and an understanding partner/bank manager: the price is £995 for a single driver or £595 each for two people sharing the driving. Even so, it’s hard to think of a more economical way to get your hands on six of the world’s best cars, without attracting the attention of the police.
