Yoga – is it religion or exercise? And should Christians do it?
That was the question Times Online asked Swami Ramdevji, an Indian yoga guru with a 120-million strong following worldwide on his recent visit to London (see video above). Ramdevji, founder of the Yoga Institute in India, which is billed as the largest yoga centre in the world, believes his brand of Pranayama yoga, based on breathing techniques, can cure serious health ailments and bring followers health, wealth and inner peace. Millions follow his classes on AsiaTV, thousands attend his free outdoor classes held in North India.
For him, yoga is a ‘science’ with health benefits. For the millions for practise Yoga in the West it is simply exercise. But for some Christians yoga is spiritually suspect, a subtle act of pagan worship. They allege that yoga cannot be separated from its roots in the Hindu faith. Last year, two Somerset vicars banned a yoga class for toddlers from their church halls. This year, a leading Roman Catholic exorcist condemned yoga as apparently harmless but as a possible conduit to “the evil spirit.”
In his best-selling pamphlet Exorcism: Understanding exorcism in scripture and practice Fr Jeremy Davies, chief exorcist of the Roman Catholic diocese of Westminster writes: “.. The thin end of the wedge (soft drugs, yoga for relaxation, horoscopes just for fun and so on) is more dangerous than the thick end, because more deceptive – an evil spirit tries to make his entry as unobtrusively as possible.”

It's not the exercise itself but what's believed about the exercise beyond the purely physical that make it a religion.
If it's believed that yoga provides benefit in ones spirit or soul then it is incompatible with the teachings of Christianity. Yoga has such beliefs as do many martial arts.
Martin, Skye,
The word yoga means ''yoke''. It's a spiritual yoke or burden that joins you with "OM'' or God. Yoga is practiced to become one with the Hindu gods and goddesses, freeing one's mind of the material world and self-realization that you are ultimately God. It is a religion, it's part of Hinduism.
Melissa , Dallas, TX
Yoga means Union. Here it means Union with God. Any prayer, silent sitting in Church or Temple or Mosque in itself is Yoga. Yoga is universal and applicable to all of mankind. Every thing is Yoga, sitting, standing, eating, sleeping etc-meaning, our every action should please God or Nature
Visu, Singapore, Singapore
Yoga can not be evil, but people can be. Yoga is a way of excersizing your body, healing your body, meditating, relaxing your mind, re-connecting with the universe, and yourself. God is love. You can pray to God during yoga, and deep prayer and meditation can bring you closer to God.
Kirsten, Canada,
For a Christian, yoga is an activity whose spiritual impact depends on how you use it. Using it for a bit of exercise is fine; but if you think that yoga will give you a special connection with God, then you're wrong. God is a relational, not experiential being. To know God, read the Bible instead.
Roger Gallagher, Merrylands, Australia
Actually people who oppose the Yoga are devil themselves. Because Yoga not only cures ones illnesss but heal the mind & soul too. A person of god never fears anything but it is devil who trembles at the sight of god like some priests. I wonder how the christians living in developed world can be fool
Shasha, Warri, Nigeria
being a christian and having don yoga once I found it very uncomfortable when I relaised just how spiritual the processs is and found myself just keeping quiet by the end of the class. These is however a solution... pilates, all of the exercise and none of the spiritual stuff on the side.
Claire, Liverpool,
Yoga excercises got rid of my crippling back ache. Now that I realise I am flirting with devil I will stick with pain killers.
Close call !
Tom, Hudderefield, UK
This is a hindu form of worship. Hindus believe in thousands of idols and yoga reflects that. They carry out signs and postures which incorporate worship of their idols ie the way they stretch out their arms to salut the sun - a god to them. Christians should shun anything to do with pagan worship.
Neil Ellis , Reading, united kingdom
"Soft drugs, yoga for relaxation, horoscopes just for fun"
All of which have inspired wars, attempted genocides, and held back the course of human progress by banning science during the Dark Ages.
Oh no wait, that was Christianity..
Dan X, Cardiff, Wales
A "leading" exorcist??? Evil "spirits"??? Someone get that man a psychiatrist...
Alastair, Alicante, Spain
Christians believe in an external higher power-God. Yoga is derived from essentially a pagan religion, and also promotes inner spiritualism. Taken in this context, it is easy to see why they would see yoga as something a bit more malevolent. I don't agree, but I caa see their point of view.
ted, london, uk
The world needs more proclamations like this. Let them be ridiculed out of existence. Please hurry it up, I'm rather bored by it all.
Jan Prejbisz, Leeds, UK
Why are spirits either good or evil? Are there not lazy, apathetic, obese, funny ones as well- something for the faithful to ponder.
iain rae, tunbridge wells, u.k.
I think this yoga-bashing is just another product of colonial mindset still prevails in the UK. Even among the clergy.
Rad, Jakarta, Indonesia
If Christians believe God is the "creator" of everything - that must include yoga. As a life long practitioner and teacher I can say yoga actually protects from evil by balancing the mind and releasing one from negative thought patterns. Rev Davies actually needs to practice yoga.
Graldine Leale, Ascot, England
most genocides and a lot of wars have been carried out in the name of religion - even believing that meditation can give a way in to evil spirits means that person has let in the twin evils of persecution and intolerance. im pretty sure no yogi is meditating on religious dictatorship.
fi, newcastle upon tyne , uk
How can you take someone who believes in eeeevel spirits trying to possess you when you're relaxing/meditating seriously??? Or that "magic" is possible. lol yeah, David Copperfield WAS really flying I suppose, haha
Tom, London,
I think a kind of true faith is tolerant, right?
Shadow, Dongguan, China
Of course Yoga is evil and a sin, otherwise it would be in the bible.
but then again, slavery and stoning are in the bible.
Martin, Lanchester,
Strange - The Christian Faith is becoming more Fundemental like many others. I once knew about an Anglican Vicar who thought that the women in a congregation who danced in a circle was tantamout to being 'Witchcraft!' Where does this nonsense come from. As a a Christian I become puzzled at times
B Clark, Chelmsford, England UK
I once knew a curious lady, who spent copious amounts of time discouraging me from all exercise - as her Christian religious values considered my toned rump a portal for the underworld. Imagine my laughter upong reading thus 'an evil spirit tries to make his entry as unobtrusively as possible'.
Samantha, Kendal,
Isn't Rev Davies the same authority who found the Harry Potter stories evil as well? His views should be accorded he utmost seriousness in the light of what he has to say. What a genius! What a man!
Mehul Kamdar, Des Plaines, IL, USA
More superstitious rubbish. It matters not where or who the source is, it is all rubbish.
Yoga will only be harmful when instructed by someone who is not a knowing individual, and when one has pre exisiting conditions, such as disc herniation etc...
S.Kelly, London,
Yoga in itself is not evil but because of its spiritual nature, it can open up a path for evil. Christians are to abstain from the practice of witchcraft, astrology, tarot cards, fortune tellng, reiki, crystal healing and the other new age practices not forgeting of course freemasonary. Rely on God
virginia, Brisbane , Australia
As an humanist who has practiced and does practice yoga, I can confirm that it creates a positive state both physically and mentally.
The view that it is evil, is not supportable. Where is the evidence yoga is evil? How many yoga related murders have there been? yoga rape? Yoga robbery? Umm..
Robert Ede, Camberley, England, UK
So Christians think yoga 'a conduit for evil spirits'. And atheists are supposed to sit down and seriously discuss evolution with them? At the bottom of all religions is not the Unitarian God of Newton/Einstein but Father Christmas and the Easter Bunny.
Eric Skelton, Cardiff, Wales
