The rubble from Ireland’s property and stock-market bubble is piled high on today’s Irish Rich List.
Buried beneath it are 28 property developers, bankers and those with heavy market exposure who no longer have the £30m required to make the island’s richest 250 list. That’s despite the 2009 entry threshold dropping by £10m. A record £12 billion was wiped off the survivors’ fortunes even quicker than it was made during the 15 years in which the Celtic Tiger roared. The biggest fallers, Sean Quinn, 62, and his family, lost almost £1.5 billion, mainly by buying up to 25% of Anglo Irish Bank, only to see it nationalised. Losses from other such gambles and plunges in stock markets globally have led to the largest fall, 25%, since we began tracking Irish wealth in 1996. Sir Tony and Lady O’Reilly, above, and Barry O’Callaghan have lost their places among Ireland’s billionaires. But some sectors are still performing, with 22 entries seeing their fortunes rise. These are led by Hilary, 67, and Galen Weston, 68, the Irish-Canadian couple who added £1 billion to their wealth. Among 30 new entries are Dr Eddie O’Connor, 61, and Paul Williams, 47, after selling their wind energy companies, and double Open champion golfer Padraig Harrington, 37.
Among newcomers in the young list is 19-year-old golf prodigy Rory McIlroy, one of two new entries from Northern Ireland in this year’s list. The other is Paul Smith, 62, who funded Slumdog Millionaire, the winner of eight Oscars. His wife, Sarah King, and Dublin business outsourcing queen Rosaleen Blair, 43, are the only new female entries but the Irish young list is split almost evenly between the sexes. Dublin’s Jennifer Cullen, 27, and her husband, Aodhan, 25, enter this list with their StatCounter software. They belong to the techno-entrepreneurial generation likely to lead Ireland’s recovery once the dust clears.
