I’ve always found Edinburgh exciting, it gives me a real buzz. It’s where you find the showcase of the world’s comedy set against grand old architecture, these incredibly majestic buildings. It’s such a strange feeling to wander around Edinburgh during the festival and feel part of something so modern and so full of history at the same time.
The first time I went to the festival was when I was 18 — my parents introduced me to the delights of Edinburgh in August. In many ways it’s the high spot of my year and I’ve even been lucky enough to perform there myself when I starred as Marilyn Monroe in Ella, Meet Marilyn at the Pleasance Theatre with Bonnie Greer and Rain
Pryor, who is the daughter of Richard Pyror. In fact I’ve been to Edinburgh religiously since I left Coronation Street in 2006. For years I wasn’t able to go because the festival clashed with filming, so when I went back for the first time in 2006 I was astounded by just how big the whole thing had become. When I first went as a teenager it was much smaller than it is now — it’s incredible to think how huge it has become since I started making my pilgrimages to Edinburgh — which really wasn’t all that long ago.
It’s an incredible thing to do a show at Edinburgh night after night and feel part of something so vibrant and hands-on. I spend most of my time off wandering around taking in the atmosphere and the various sights, which I never get tired of, particularly the castle and The Witchery when I can get a table.
I have seen so many shows at Edinburgh I can barely remember their names. I think Steve Coogan was the first comedian I saw there, but that would have been one of any number of the times that I’ve seen him.
Of course some of the shows are rubbish, but with more than 2,000 what can you expect? There’s plenty of good stuff and never enough time.
