When I meet Chervana and Craig after filming is completed, I find two teenagers who, for all the sometimes glib statements that appear in the 22 minutes edited from their three months of footage, are bright, articulate and have thought a lot about their sexuality.

In Craig’s diary we eventually see him the morning after a successful night before with Chloe. He is so elated that he does exactly what you would expect in the circumstances: he invites the camera crew into the bedroom to film him bringing Chloe a celebratory breakfast. “The film crew came round in the morning and I was like ‘yeahhh!’ ”

By the end of her diary Chervana is dating girls but has not had sex yet. “When I lose my virginity I’m starting to accept the fact that it might be a girl. I’m not going to be grossed out by it at all.” When I see her at the MTV offices it seems that her mother’s suggestion that she might be going through a phase is not such a cliché after all. Chervana says that she is now not sure if she is gay and is dating boys. “I don’t really know now. My mum said ‘whatever makes you happy’. She thought it was a phase and everyone else did. Maybe they’re right. I still don’t really know.”

What she is clear about is that making the programme has clarified that she will have sex only “when I meet the right person. I’m waiting for someone hopefully I can be in love with. I don’t feel under pressure now”.

Craig admits that love was never on his agenda. “It’s definitely more about the relationship in the end. Having sex is just jumping up and down for half an hour, it’s not a life-changing event. But I don’t think you have to be in love. Sex is another step you have to go through. I think you want to have a bit of experience so you know what you are doing.

“I thought it was really good I was in a relationship at the time. That was the way I saw myself losing my virginity, not a one-night stand. I felt I had sex with the right person. I have spoken to other people who just lost it on a whim and they said it was a bad idea.”

He is nonplussed about TV viewers being privy to his initial bedroom misadventures. “I don’t mind. I told all my mates I had problems and they were like ‘yeah, it’s normal’.” He says that making the programme helped him and he hopes that the issues raised might help others.

After a few weeks of “mad rampant sex” Craig and Chloe are no longer an item. “We discovered that there are quite big differences between us. Like, she’s an absolute clean freak and did you see my room? It’s a tip. That caused quite a lot of conflict and we went our separate ways.”

When he lost his virginity he was “buzzing. Now it’s behind me. Not a big deal any more. When you are a virgin looking forward it seems a huge deal. And it is a huge deal. But when you look back it’s nothing really.”

Now he’s focused on getting good enough A levels to go to medical school next year and playing the field. “I’ve kissed a couple of girls but haven’t managed to have sex with anyone else. But I would be up for some more.”
