GPs Most are effectively self-employed. GPs generally receive between four and six weeks, with limits on how much they can take at one time.
Academia Most British universities give staff 33 to 35 days’ paid leave, plus public holidays and days when the university is closed (at Christmas and Easter). Universities remain open in summer, when academics are engaged in “self-managed scholarly activity”.
Armed Forces All personnel are entitled to 30 days per year, plus public holidays. Army officers are entitled to be flown home for two weeks in mid-tour.
Charity workers Most big charity organisations, such as Oxfam and the NSPCC, offer staff about six weeks a year plus Bank Holidays, although admin staff may receive a less charitable 20 days.
McDonald’s Flipping burgers would earn you up to 28 days a year, including Bank Holidays.
Nurses Minimum of four weeks a year, increasing with length of service.
Bankers Six weeks a year is considered a good deal for City bankers. Many get as little as ten days a year. Branch staff can expect just above the legal minimum.
Central Government Assistants and researchers have their terms set individually by the MPs for whom they work, which could mean anything from the legal minimum to 30 days plus bank holidays. Workers are discouraged from taking holidays while Parliament is sitting. After ten years of service, a civil servant can expect 30 days plus Bank Holidays, with half a day for Maundy Thursday and a day off for being a loyal public servant on the Queen’s birthday.
Retail Shelf-stackers and till assistants at Tesco can expect annual leave to begin at 21 days and increase with service. Clothes stores such as Oasis offer up to 33 days, including Bank Holidays.
Chefs Chefs working in hotels and leisure complexes get four weeks a year. The Dorchester offers five weeks’ leave for employees who serve for ten years.
Farmworkers A five-day-a-week worker is entitled to 31 days’ paid leave, 24 days of which must be taken as time off work. The rest may be replaced with pay. Summer is the busiest time of year, though.
Hairdressers Twenty-eight days a year, including Bank Holidays.
Accountants Most who are not self-employed can expect 25 days, plus Bank Holidays.
