Why bother getting married? For romantic reasons — to show our commitment to each other in front of friends and family. I proposed to Laura on April 24 this year, our tenth anniversary, at the Temple of Dionysus in Athens. It was very romantic. Though I like the fact that it will be recognised by the state, it does mean a lot to me emotionally that we can bring our friends and family together and make a statement in front of them. It’s a way of sharing our love for each other, and it’s important to celebrate life events publicly. It is also about protecting each other legally and financially.

I don’t think there is any fundamental difference between the attitudes of gay men and women towards marriage. Most of our gay male friends are in long-term committed relationships. The idea that women are more romantic and men are more commitment-phobic is a crass stereotype. Our motivation is no different from any other couple who get married — this is just the first opportunity we have had. In my head, we are married already. I think the take-up is going to be higher than the Government expects. We’ll be going to a lot of ceremonies — most couples we know who are in committed relationships are going to do it. The legal protection will be a great comfort. I want to know that if, God forbid, Nicola were in an accident, I would have the right to be at her bedside and make decisions. It is a big step forward for equality. Gay relationships are as valid and as loving as any other and it’s time the law caught up with the reality.
